As canner said, there's no harm in applying this year, the interview experience will be invaluable come next year or whenever, if nothing else. Also what'll you say when they ask you why haven't you applied until you're 23 if you're so interested?
You will really need to get across that you really want this job and you're prepared to be a military pilot rather than just a civil one because there is a big difference. Once again bear in mind the 7 months in the Curragh - a tough slog.
As canner said again, the attitude and appearance is everything. 6 places (or 10 this year) is very very little and you'll really need to stand out if you're going to entertain notions of becoming an AC pilot. Don't waste the next few months, start working on it now and the best of luck!
