Irish Air Corps / Neutraility?
« on: June 16, 2004, 01:17:12 am »
Using real names isn't an option for people serving in the DF or other services. People have got in a lot of trouble in the past over the most innocuous statements.

Give whatever name you want, and reply to whoever you like, but you need to think outside your own circumstances on matters like this.

FG won't get a majority no matter what happens - this is certain. This means that they'd need to form a coalition. The current likely candidates are Labour and the Greens, remember them? The ones who gave out about the Mowag purchases.

Thanks for that input, I don't think it's relevant though.

Damn near all of what passed for discussion on other forums and the media is ill-informed and not too useful. Yes, I have searched them already.

Initial research has shown up points of potential interest, not thoroughly covered in the official report.

Irish Air Corps / Rescue 111

I'm currently working on a report for a safety management assignment. The subject I'm looking at is the loss of Rescue 111 at Tramore in 1999.

As research I've gone through the AAIB report, plus had some contact with the United States Coast Guard regarding their HH65 operations.

What I'd like to add is some input from the Irish side, either current/former Air Corps or other SAR/Aviation professionals.

Taking the AAIB report as a starting point, how would you assess it, were points left out/under emphasised. Do you feel the report came to fair conclusions? Have the recommendations from the report been implemented properly?

If you want to contact me offline that's fine either by private message here or to brightyellowjacket@yahooDOTcoDOTuk

As a mark of respect to the memory of all  involved, I'd prefer if this thread is kept to the point, and that coments are constructive.

Thanks

How does someone get into Baldonnel, get as far as the Apron and then be there long enough to do such a thing and then get back out, only to come back a few weeks later and do it again. I know it is a big place, access seems easy, to do it once maybe to do it twice!!!! heads should roll.

You're assuming that someone did.

The Swiss have legal issues with exporting weapon-fitted aircraft, I think Slovenia had to get pylons fitted on their PC9's somewhere else.

Does the same thing affect the Irish aircraft?

Yep, I guess one unarmed, and one armed, 1970s turbo prop would frighten the bejaysus out of anyone planning an attack.

Guess what, it's good old fashioned piston power keepin the Marchettis in the sky. '<img'>

Is the military H92 or the civil S92 variant being considered?

During the Emergency, warplans were for the Irish Gladiator fleet to be parked along the runway at Baldonnel, thereby denying its use to enemy aircraft.

Could work again in a pinch.

..... and somebody here mentioned (a while back) that new AS355's/Fennecs were on offer a year ago for €1 million each !

€8 million would have replaced the Alouette fleet !!!

Eceurils hardly seem to provide an adequate replacement for an AIII.

It would be good PR for the Corps, seeing as this jet will be spending most of it's time abroad (in 2004 especially!).

Don't see how a small bizjet whizzing around quiet airbases or VIP sections of airbases delivering civil servants and politicans is of much PR benefit to the AC.

Irish Air Corps / 24hr Air Ambulance service
« on: November 10, 2003, 11:42:10 am »
Night time air ambulance operations are still relatively rare. There are none in the UK. Possibly some in Germany, I think.

Of course, if your pre-hospital care system depends on HEMS, but your helis can't fly at night (when most of your nasty incidents will happen) this could be a problem.

Would refitting the Dauphin for this role be viable? The type is/was used in the role in many places, including by London HEMS up till a few years ago.

If the A/C were to take on the job, the aircraft would have to be exclusive to the air ambulance role. The rate of usage envisaged for helicopters to allow for closing of some A&E depts wouldnt leave much time for anything else.
