No performance penalty in relation to speed, but an increase in fuel burn.The gear is raised and lowered as required, it can be left down for short hops. If travelling any distance the gear will normally be up. The 92 differs to the 61 in relation to winching in that the gear has to be down to prevent EGPWS aural warnings.

The new contract for the IRCG helo's will go ahead, so no change there for about 10 to 12 years. Where you might find the IAC in full time SAR again is providing top cover 24/7 and then take it from there. If that doesn't work, well you might just see the IRCG and UK MCA teaming up together to provide their own top cover.

Rescue 117 arrived into Bal around noon to refuel, after searching for the two fisherman missing off Skerries. After fuel uplift R 117 returned to Waterford.

Well Spotted, maybe the journalist in question know more about the next contract than the boys and girls in Waterford do...

I'm joking of course.

By the way, I was reading on another board the stats for helo availability at the IRCG bases for last year. It is broken down per base, per month. The figure for an all base average was 99%. Not bad at all for aircraft of that vintage.

I think you will find that the IRCG will require winchmen who carry out taskings on their behalf to be at least to PHECC paramedic standard.

The canx of Nimrod with no replacement will have a knock on effect here where top cover is concerned. I know C-130 j's are filling this gap for the UK where possible, but they too are also for the axe.

If I was a betting man I would say the military pilots ear marked to be used for SAR-H will now end up flying on chinooks inc the 12 new chinooks the UK are going to purchase,with the UK SAR service been civilianised.We will know soon enough.
