Irish Air Corps / PC-9's over Dublin City Centre
« on: October 08, 2007, 07:25:31 pm »
I heard they were performing a ceremonial flypast over the Áras during the visit of a foreign dignitary. King of Belgium according to RTÉ news. We don't normally see PC-9s in formation over the city because they conduct formation and aerobatic training over the less populated training areas to the South and West of Baldonnel. In terms of safety, I did notice that they did most of their holds prior to the flypast over Dublin Bay and that they routed back to Baldonnel along the foothills.

Irish Air Corps / 172 replacement?
« on: March 22, 2006, 07:13:57 pm »
It certainly is an extremely capable aircraft with excellent STOL performance. However, I'd say the choice for the future C172 replacement will be dictated by what the primary role(s) of such an aircraft will be, and right now, this is anyone's guess!

I wouldn't necessarily agree with you there Stevie. Imagine how an interview board feel when literally every individual who comes in for interview tells you they play sport on a school/club team. It really doesn't indicate anything particularly special about the individual, especially when it is generally a small enough group who do not play some form of sport nowadays. Even if they don't, surely they have some other experience to tell of which shows them capable of being a 'team player'. Im sure it gets a bit monotonous after a while hearing the same old story with each and every candidate who presents themselves for interview eg. I was captain of the Under 12's (6 years ago) and I was vice, vice captain of the U-7's when I used to play soccer! What it takes is for the candidate to demonstrate something a little more out of the ordinary, to distinguish that person from the next one who walks through the door.
Now, imagine the candidate who comes in the door and tells you he/she is so interested in flying, that at the age of 16 or 17 (for example) he/she bothered their barney to take a couple of flying lessons to see if they enjoyed the experience. If I was on an interview board, I'd immediately take stock of this individual! How did he/she fund this flying, as lessons don't come cheap these days! Then he/she tells you they spent the money they earned working part time to finance the lessons.
Wow, how could you not say fair play....they took the time to experience flight and they spent their own hard earned cash to do it. Need I say anymore?!

Fouga,

Indeed you are correct. The 2 aircraft you saw were practicing instrument approaches at Carnmore with the current Cadet Class.

For those of you who thought the Tucano and Dutch PC-7 did a better display than the PC-9, please bear this point in mind...The Pilot of the IAC PC-9 is a flight instructor in the flying school and has very little time outside of the 'normal' days flight instruction to Cadet Pilots to devise and practice his display. Secondly, the Pilots of the Tucano and PC-7 do nothing else all year round except practice and perform their routine on the international circuit. I thought the IAC Pilot did a fantastic job given the very little time he had to prepare/practice.

I wouldn't say smoke pods are a 'no no' Taj. The aircraft were 'plumbed' for smoke during construction and all associated systems are in place. It's just a matter of purchasing the pods at some stage in the future when the Minister warrants such expenditure.

Easy there Fouga. Don't be so quick to jump down someone's throat. "Everybody still thinks we have more than one flying" because we do. There are 2 Dauphins still operational. Taj is incorrect in saying there is only one.

Cheers. '<img'>
