Squadron patch pics -

Has anybody else noticed how articles that appear in magazines about the Air Corps never include pics of the various Squadron patches (e.g. like my LSS patch on the left < )  ?

Articles about the RAF, USAF, etc. often include pics of the relevant squadon patch and really add to the look and authenticity of the article.

Perhaps we will see AC patch pics in a future issue of An Coasantoir, AFM, ........ ?


Incidentially, a poster of all the AC patches would be a promotion tool for the AC.  
Surely An Cosantoir could organise such a pull-out poster for it's readers ?!

yes i agree.they could also do an article on the badges and how each one was chosen!An cosaintoir doesnt really pay as much attention to the AirCorps as it does the other services! '>

Given that the Air Corps represents less than 10% of the full strength of the PDF, the "Cosantoir" could be forgiven for not awarding the AC "top" billing, so to speak.Given the amount of events that take place in the PDF, such as sporting events, parades, exercises, trials of equipment,etc, I'd be surprised if the magazine got to cover everything.Also, given that so many of the magazine's photographs have been taken by AC snappers,they have had plenty of opportunity to get "their" shots in, instead of Army/Navy shots. I don't think the editorial staff of the Cosantoir would regard themselves as being Army-biased in any way.I'd say that the Army features less in national press coverage, given it's size, compared to the AC, which tends to be more visible (nothing like a helicopter to attract attention).Also, the Don isn't at all shy about putting it's "face" out before the public gaze.

There are no official sqn patches anymore as the wearing of patches on flying suits has been reduced to leather name tag and Aircorps flash. But I see that some have been slowly creeping back like the FTS one and Maritime. Some of the older stuff aswell as one or two more recent ones can be seen on Jim Perkins site www.irishmilitaryinsignia.com .

Havnt seen any of the older ones, only on that site i was talking of. Only the FTS instructors and the Maritime SARO's seem to be wearing their "Flaming torch" and "Eyes over the sea" patches respectivly.

Why are 'Hawkeyes' etc. not wearing Sqdn patches ?
Are they officially banned ?

Nooo. Sensor and Radar Operators. No SAR Ops any more, remember? Efforts are currently underway to finally approve official squadron flashes for all squadrons including the maint and support squadrons. It's a slow process to get agreement from the brass and appropriate designs together, but it will happen. The various unofficial badges over the years have included the Cadet Class badges each class generates to celebrate commissioning, but which have been a source of controversy in the past. It was generally acceptable to wear them, but in order to present a more standardised and professional military bearing in public and internally, the winged leather patch and flash have been agreed on for the moment as the only permissible ones. Jim Perkins has most if not all the badges produced over the years.
