now that i actually think about it, it would be rather stupid using them as targets because if you hit them with one round they are gone!and at about roughly 600euro for one it would be a really dear way to practise!they might as well tow big kites behind a fast boat or a rib about 100meters behind and shoot that up instead!

We have agreed that it is an Irish Naval Officer at a Naval open day, therefore this is an official display. Can you therefore explain what they are used for?

Sousa Teuszii I have no idea what the NS use them for. Only that most forces around the world put up UAVs in the hope that thay will get them back, we are supposed to fire at ours with .5s!? I dont think so. A little common sense please

If I told you that out of the 4 originally purchased, only 2 are still flying, and one of those is slightly damaged, would you still think its a wind up?

Cost wise, its cheaper to write off a few hundred euro worth of toy helicopter, than have a drogue towing aircraft wait for ideal weather conditions to do pass after pass so the ships secondary gunners can take potshots at it.

And then there is the Clay Pigeons...

Most Navies and air forces in the world have traditionally used UAVs, called drones, with the express purpose of shooting the c**p out of them! Its only in recent years that drones and UAVs have been utilised in the Recce role and therefore are nice to have come home. Its interesting that you ask for common sense while purely discounting everybody elses ideas even though you have no idea what they are used for

Now, clay pigeons i have seen...!!!  I did hear something about shooting at the little helis but i'm still skeptical...  '>

Seagulls would be a more cost effective target for NS gunners than clay pigeones,and more ecological too!!! As for floating targets why not use the Hump-backed dolphin?
