If that is the case and I am sure it is, why did'nt the Dauphins get a re-furb, or was it the case if we don't ask and say they are past there sell by date we may get new helicopters then we can try and slip the Dauphin re-furb in there.

The Dauphins required a lot more than a new coat of paint and a Cabin refurb 'pilot_sad'

There is a huge difference between putting in new carpets and seats and upgrading an aircrafts avionics suite.

Consider it the same as rebuilding a PC, only on a larger scale.

Totally understand Sealion, but I still maintain that the concept of it is still the same.
Plus if you don't ask you don't get.

Pilatus,
Perhaps you are right about keeping 240 until she falls apart but like an old banger the older she gets the more she costs. As for selling 240 have a look on the internet. Most SKA 200s have a max of 3-4000hrs and a corporate background. Would you buy an aircraft with about 15,000 hrs and a military maritime and training background? As for getting 100-200,000 for its sale they just wasted that on the repaint!
The fact is to replace a King Air used for twin engine training with anything bigger then a Piper Seneca would cost about ten times as much to purchase and 5 times as much to operate per hour. Consider also that with only one aircraft all training must be suspended during maintenance, why not have a fleet of high quality light twins for training?
I realise that the SKA 200 does do some VIP missions in Ireland but surely over the next year these will be done quicker and more effectively by the incoming heli fleet. Anything outside Ireland should be the remit of the learjet and GIV.

Sorry Pilatus I forgot to ask,
The UAVs you mention, are these the Mini UAVs that are said to be on test at present. If you have any info would you let me know. I asked on Irish Mil Online with little result. Thanks

Pilatus,
This looks good but:
1. Both engines are due Hot Section Inspections.
2. Both engines are half way to overhaul.
3. The cost for this 10 year old airframe is the same as about 4. EFIS equipped, FADEC operated twin engine training aircraft.
5. At about $700 per hour to operate it is about 5 times more expensive to operate then the above trainer.
6. There are 365 days in every year. In 2004 the Learjet flew 130 missions. The SKA 200 flew 103. This is a total of 233 missions, a figure that should be well inside the yearly capacity of the Learjet alone. There is NO requirement for another VIP transport aircraft. The purchase of one to spend most of its air time being flown in the VFR or IFR circuit is a complete waste of money that the Air Corps could better utilise else where.
