Hi GttC,

It was probably the DC-3 that arrived in Shannon at about 2pm today from Liverpool, I've got a picture of it just about to touch down, I'll post it the pic when I can.

Regards,

Frank.

It was built as a C47 which is the military version as the DC3 and was known as the Dakota in the RAF. Nice picture Frank.

Hi all
Lovely picture,Frank the Omnipresent...the first aircraft I ever flew in was Air Atlantique's G-AMPO at an airshow in Farranfore, so Daks have a special appeal to me.

I hope that I am not going off thread. Checking through my files and other references there seems to be a lot of confusion about G - Ampo and it's former identity. Can any of you civil aircraft specialists out there put it right?

was the corps ever offered DC-3s?the way they are still going today it would have been a good investment!they could have been upgraded with turboprops just like several latin american and asian countries have done!thailand recently recieved "new" standard C47s with basler turboprops GPS and a modern cockpit!the ones they recieved were built in 1944 i think it was!a remarkable plane!
above and beyond

Tony, does this help?

G-AMPO Dakota IV c/n 16438/33186, ex-RAF KN566, first registered as G-AMPO 25/02/1952, became LN-RTO of Polaris Air Transport Feb. 1965, restored as G-AMPO June 1969.

Hi all
Isn't G-AMPO now on display as KN566 and painted in D-Day RAF colours?

Thanks SF for that. Air Britain Publication The Douglas DC3 and it predecessors states that G-AMPO was 16437/33185 44-76853. It lists 16438/33186 as 44-76854 a TC-47B del May 1945. to USN 99833 as R4D-7 Clinton 14 May 1945.

Tony, that's interesting.  Air Britain are, as you are probably aware, about to issue a much updated volume on the DC-3, so it will be interesting to see what it says.  The official CAA register website G-INFO shows the c/n as 33186.  I also have an old 1970s Midland Counties book on the complete UK civil register, which gives the same information.
