Hi all
Just been reading about Mirages and found out that the identity code of any French aircraft is composed of it's squadron and the last two letters of it's French civil registration.So that would make "3-KE" a Third Squadron aircraft,with an "F-" registration ending in"KE". The aircraft's c/n would have been painted on the nose-gear door or on the tail.I would wonder why they would consume so many registrations in this way.I wonder does the French registration stay "live" while the aircraft remains French and is extinguished only when the aircraft is sold abroad, destroyed or taken out of service for good.

The French military do use a civil-style "registration" for flightplan and occasionally callsign purposes but this is not an official civil identity.  These may or may not tie up with what is painted on the aircraft.  Examples would be the Transalls which usually quote on flight-plans a "registration" e.g. F-RAZQ for an aircraft coded 61-ZQ, and famously their C-135s, which use "F-UK" as the first three letters.  F-UKCK is an actual example, belonging to aircraft 63-12739 coded CK.

I wonder if it is the same as the old Soviet system, whereby the transport aircraft had military and civil registrations.It also begs the question;are the French combat aircraft civil-certified or is the use of civil registrations just a convenience for international flight.

I think we are way off topic here!

I can't see how types in military-only use would warrant civil certification, even if anyone was prepared to pay the cost.  In the former USSR there were many aircraft operated by the military in Aeroflot colours and with civil registrations - this continues with certain transport types such as the Il-76 and An-124, especially where they operate internationally.  Shannon sees visits of such aircraft from time to time, usually in support of presidential visits to North America.
