Marchetti's and new aviation museum
« on: March 26, 2006, 11:21:33 pm »
I notice from the current edition of 'Flying In Ireland' that apparently there are no plans to retain a Marchetti for the Air Corps Museum collection ?

Also mentioned in the magazine is the plan to establish an aviation museum in Weston Aerodrome - This is news to me!
(The piece includes a photo of a Catalina flying boat destined for this new museum).

Some of the a/c from the museum in the don are to be transferred to the National Museum in Collin's barracks, Dublin!
I know the Vampire is going and I think a Fouga? They are to be hung from the ceiling apparently??
Pity they cant stay were they are, but I suppose that at least the public will get to see them by just walking in off the street instead of having to go through all the hassle of getting onto base!

The museum may get one yet. W230 has taken quite a kicking over the years. If its not purchased it may be given to the museum.

Hi Souza
There's been a lot of interest in the Marchettis so retention of one for the Museum might depend on how well they and their spares sell. I'd imagine whichever of the aircraft that requires a new engine might be the best candidate for retention.

The two aircraft for the National Museum are Vampire 198 ex RAF XE977 and the Miles Magister 34 and the latter at last will be in a  correct colour scheme. Work is in progress and both are in a partially dismantled state and looking good.
Gttc enjoyed your article in "Flying In Ireland".
