RAF to retire Nimrod R1s next year

The Royal Air Force is to retire its two remaining Nimrod R1s early next year.

Gary Parsons - 16-Apr-2010

April 16: The Royal Air Force is to retire its two remaining Nimrod R1s early next year, with both aircraft destined for preservation with museums.

East Midlands Aeropark adjacent to Nottingham East Midlands Airport in Leicestershire has announced it will receive one from RAF Waddington, believed to be XW664. To raise funds all events at the Aeropark (with the exception of the Air Ambulance day) will be in aid of the ‘Nimrod Fund’.

Newark Air Museum is to receive the currently withdrawn airframe XW665, which will be dismantled at RAF Waddington and transported by road. The last R1, XV249, is believed to be allocated for the Imperial War Museum at Duxford.
