Theoretically the Dauphin should be a more capable A/C in this role but I'd Imagine the simplicity and reliability of the AIII as well as the various issues had with the Dauphin would make the AIII the only real option.

What Air Corps aircraft have been deployed abroad ?
(be it on a UN mission, Training ops, etc)

I recall reading about one of the CASA's on a mission to the US about two years ago. It flew there via Iceland, Greenland and Newfoundland.
The reason for this mission was to demonstrate the CASA's suitability for it's maritime role to the U.S. Coast Guard who, incidentially, were very impressed with what they saw.

I believe the CASA's have also flown on resupply missions to our Army units based abroad on UN missions (Lebanon ?).


Any heli's ever been deployed overseas (incl the UK) ?

I have always advocated that we send our Corps and a/c on UN peacekeeping missions.  When the 6 counties situation was improving perhaps we could have sent some of our Reims Rockets to UNIFIL for example.  Going back to our involvement in the Congo and Cyprus in the 1960s, which  resulted in purchase of up to date military equipment- surely the same would happen if we sent the IAC to some of our foreign expeditions?  The Dauphins, Casa, Super King and Reims Rockets come to mind.  During the 1960s while we had over 500 troops based in Cyprus the RNZAF had an attachment of D/H Vampire jets based on the island as part of their UN commitment!

Theres a rumour goin round the don at the moment that we are to lease a CN-295 or a Herc to assist the troops in Liberia!
Apparently its to be used,god forbid, medivac!
But the good thing about it if it does go ahead is that its rumoured to be based in the Caneries, Woo Hoo!! Wont be a shortage of people volunteering for Ramp crew there I can tell ye!

Its a shame no one advvocated sending Light Helis for tactical CASEVAC, they could be used for rapid evacuation outside of hotzones.
It would have been good for the IAC, to be seen doing something.

Good point Imshi.
While the AC does excellent work here at home, it normally goes unnoticed - whereas a foreign deployment (e.g. Liberia) would get a lot of press coverage.


It brings me to a point I made in another thread -
Has an Alouette ever being used onboard L.E. Eithne for an extended period ?
(I presume it would be an Alouette that would be dispatched for such ops)
