PC-9's on grass airstrips ?

Can anybody confirm if the PC-9's are capable of grass airstrip ops ?

I thought they were listed as being so capable during the tendering process, or perhaps I'm thinking of the Super Tucano ?

If so, have they yet operated from a grass runway ......or any plans to do so in the future ?

Hi there
The PC-9 could probably use a grass strip without any bother,but would have to be wary of picking up stones or eroding the surface of the prop.Thousands of turbos have flown off worse.The PC-9 is probably cleared for non-tarmac operations but you'd want to be really stuck..

Why would they be using grass strips, outside of dire emergencies?

Indeed, most likely to be used in dire emergency only.

(I was mostly wishing to know if it could easily operate from a grass strip.)

However, it would add an interesting element to advanced training if grass strip ops were a part of it.

The use of non-hard-surfaced runways is not routinely practised by the Don, with the obvious exception of the helicopters, because such unprepared surfaces are not swept regularly and are too risky to use for casual training.Anyone landing on a grass field knows that the possibility of sucking in a stone or eroding the prop blades is very real.The corrosive power of dust has to be seen to be believed.I once flew to Sligo in 240 and there was beach sand blown across the runway.We landed and the pilots applied reverse thrust, as required.When we shut down,I had a look at the props.The paint had been sanded off the blades, along a length of about 15 inches, as effectively as if they had been sandblasted in a workshop.There was no damage to the metal, but the paint removal was the equivalent of a full service life's wear and tear.Airport operators are very conscious of the need to maintain clean runways and ramp areas and sweep them regularly, often with magnetic devices and industrial brush sweepers.It's cheaper than replacing engines!

Our version of the PC9 has high pressure wheels and tyres and is not suitable for grass strips. We would have to change to low pressure wheels and tyres to be fully suitable for grass strips.

We would also have to change our U/C doors to make room for the wider tyres.

So now ye know.

GTTC how are the arrangements for the re-union going? Just to let you know as well that JJ O'Neills father passed away the weekend. Ring the lads in the shop and I'm sure they will pass on the details.
