I think by Italian friends you mean the MB-339's that visited a year or two ago. An RAF Herc has made a few trips recently too.

More Islander opinions.
Up to the production of the BN2T4S, all models sold were called Islanders, both Piston, and Turbo-Prop. The military then called them whatever they wanted, including Defender. There was no difference to the aircraft for it to be called anything but Islander.

In 1996, Pilatus Britten Norman build the BN2T4S, which had an extended fuselage, and larger wings. They sold it as the Defender 4000. To date, I beleive that five have been built.

Although sold as a Defender 4000, the aircraft is still an Islander variant.
