I was wodering does any one know much about the Irish Aircorps and the Congo.  I know that they had being in the Congo, would love to hear more on this subject from anyone that knows a lot on this topic. ':cool:'  ':cool:'

Major Correction on my part,
The photo was of the Aircorps over in Cyprus!!!! I stand corrected and thanks to all of you for your feedback. If you know much about the Aircorps in any type of UN Role please fill this topic up. ':cool:'

I remember hearing a story that the Air Corps Pipe Band was in the Congo around the time of the fatalities there. While I was in the Don in the 70's there were still some of the former band members around.

The Air Corps where not in the Congo, the two Irish battalions were transported into the theatre by USAF airlift, and then when the fighting intensified and the vehicles were painted green, we had air support from Indian air force Canberra bombers and Swedish fighters.

I saw a photo on an Irish UN Veterns site, that placed them over in the Congo. In  the background is the Aircorps colors.
I or ready know about the US Airforce flying into Baldonnel to pick up everyone.

Exactly what could we have sent?
The army was the only service to participate in the Congo unless airmen volunteered to serve as infantry?

Well there is an Irish Air Corps connection of sorts to the Congo.  Some of the Fougas were originally destined for the Katanga Air Force but were embargoed.  They were eventually refit and sold to the IAC.  Which kind of illustrates how useful an aircraft they were by the time they reached the Don in the late seventies.
Plus, the Irish forces in Congo came under attack from Fouga/s while out there.

I found a photo of an Irish Air Corps group over in the
Congo on a Irish Veterns site-United Nations-Mullingar detatchment. Well I hope some one can give me some more Confirmation on the Irish Air Corps over in the Congo. ':cool:'
