Hi pilatus,
I'd say that is a fantasy scheme more so than an actual scheme, the pilot probably just liked the way the US Navy painted their aircraft.

Yes, you may have heard the apocryphal story of the enthusiast who berated the American owner of a Spitfire warbird about the less than accurate colour scheme. The response was along the lines of "it's my Spitfire and I'll paint it whatever **** way I like!"

Have you seen pictures of the PINK Spitfire? Maybe the owner's colourblind!
Also don't forget the Yanks never let reality get in the way of a good story!

Wasn't that a real scheme? I though I read something about a spitfire painted desert pink or something in WW2
