Qualifications for aircorps-NEED ADVICE!
« on: September 01, 2005, 05:06:12 pm »
Hello..
This is my first time to post in this site..
I am 17 and i hope to be a pilot in the A.C.
I am currently doing my Leaving Cert and i am hoping to travel to Australia for a year after the L.C. then do an B.A. degree in History and Geog and apply for the A.C. Cadetships when im 22/23.I am also a member of the Reserves.
Is this a good plan or does anyone have any advice on how i should go about College and Cadetships etc?Is the age too old or less favourable etc??
Any advice will be appreciated!
Cheers,
Dave......... '<img'>

You may not be able to spend a year in Australia due to membership of the RDF. Check out this thread on IMO

Hello there
First, don't wait til you're 22 or 23.You'll be a different person then and might not have the interest in flying/having a military career that you think you have now.Apply after you have seen your LC results, so that if you don't get in the first time, you'll have room,age-wise, to try again.Go and talk to current Air Corps pilots and get a real insight into what an AC pilot actually does. It's a lot different than you might think.Flying is only part of the job, not the full job like a civil pilot.Do as much research as you can on an Air Corp pilot's routine before you ever reach the interview.
If you haven't ever flown, go and get an intro flight to see if you really like it. You might actually hate it,you never know.
Also, it reads in your post as if you want to be an academic or hold down a business-related job first and be a pilot second. Becoming an AC pilot is tough enough, unless you are determined enough and prepared to spend 6 months in the Curragh before you even see an aircraft, let alone sit in one. There's no shortage of study and plenty of pressure to succeed. You absolutely have to want the job, really, really want it and be prepared to work very hard.As an aside, if you really want to be a pilot, consider borrowing and funding your civil licenses.
Australia can wait.It won't go away and it's already chocka with Irish.Service in the RDF proves only that you can respond to discipline, but it can't hurt. The interview board will want to see an intelligent, maturing individual with a credible range of interests and a record of achieving results.Again, get some interview technique practise beforehand.
The Defence Forces are very active in promoting their careers, at school and college level.Your careers guidance teacher should be able to sort you out there. If not, contact the Air Corps PR and they'll direct you.
Good luck.
GttC

Thanks for the replies lads..
I was talking to my mates uncle whos an aircraft mechanic in the A.C. and he says of the 6 pilots taken on last year,4 held hons degrees and apparantly the average age for cadets is 20-21..I reckon i'll go for college and apply in my 2nd or 3rd year, cause id definitely have no problem dropping college if i was accepted by the A.C.
Cheers,

Hi Aerodave
Clearly, you don't want this hard enough. You will have an opportunity to apply each year until you are 23 and already, you want to throw away half those chances.Forget what anyone else allegedly has or hasn't got.You only have to worry about yourself and possession of a degree is no guarantee of entry.Don't take second hand gen on face value.Go and talk to the pilots;I can put you in contact with some, if you're really committed to getting into the Don.You also appear to have a casual attitude to college;your attitude seems to be that you'll take a precious place and then ditch it at a moment's notice, therefore wasting a college slot that someone else might take to fruition.
Applying only takes a while to fill out a form and send it and do some research and make a few phonecalls.Don't let the opportunity go by.If you get to interview, you need to project the attitude and appearance that you are absolutely determined to get a seat in an Air Corps cockpit. If you tell them you couldn't be arsed applying for three years, they'll transfer your application to the bin.
Rant mode switched to calm.
regards

As canner said, there's no harm in applying this year, the interview experience will be invaluable come next year or whenever, if nothing else. Also what'll you say when they ask you why haven't you applied until you're 23 if you're so interested?

You will really need to get across that you really want this job and you're prepared to be a military pilot rather than just a civil one because there is a big difference. Once again bear in mind the 7 months in the Curragh - a tough slog.

As canner said again, the attitude and appearance is everything. 6 places (or 10 this year) is very very little and you'll really need to stand out if you're going to entertain notions of becoming an AC pilot. Don't waste the next few months, start working on it now and the best of luck!
