I put this poll up to see what you all think of the current condition of Baldonnel. I personally would like to see Baldonnel get revamped and also new equipment. '<img'>  ':cool:'

we all would Marine,but wishes don't always come true!
The new Pilatus aircraft and the leased S-61 will certainly provide a well earned boost in capabilities though.
I was in Baldonnel there on tuesday and I certainly see it as a very capable base given the current size of the Aircorps fleet,the loss of Finner as an operational base is a blow though.I was wondering also why  Finner could not have been used as the base for the S-61,is it because of the civilian techies or something similar?

I belive the hanger in Finner is a bit too small for the S-61, however Finner is not finished yet as the Dauphin may see futher service as Donagal SAR while the S-61 goes for planned maintenence.

Does anyone know if there has been a special hangar built at Sligo for the S-61?I know Sligo has hangar facilities but I doubt they would need to build a new one would they?

The hangar in Carrickfinn airport in Donegal is currently holding an S-61,the S-61 serves the oil drilling boat off the coast at the moment.Perhaps if we struck oil the government could get some revenue to build up the air corps?!

The Govt should have revamped the Defence Forces when the Tiger was at its height!!!!!!! I see that the Aircorps band are traveling around the globe these days-hmm I wonder the conversations with American Fighter pilots are like.  

Aircorps-I use to fly Fouga's.
American Fighter pilot-I am currently flying an F18.

Aircorps pilot on his way to the Airport-Honey pack up everything in the house and sell the house.  We are moving to the States, I am sick of of flying trainers.   I am going to join the American Navy and become  a Fighter pilot over here.

This is why things have got to change in the Irish Defence Forces!!!!!!!! Lets hope someone of importance makes Irelands Defence Forces a priority!!!!!!!!!!!

I do love my beloved Irish Aircorps and Defence Forces!!!!!!

Personnally i think that Baldonnel-Casement is in good condition and the plans of further upgrade of its infrastructure will only benefit the Air Corps in general such plans as a new ATC Tower,Instrument Landing System (ILS) etc... will enhance the general operational capability of Baldonnel (EIME) And a possible new hangar and extension of the ramp in the Don if a new larger transport aircraft were purchased could further enhance the operational capabilites of Landside/Airside ops there.

Hi all
Build on the south side, giving access from the industrial estate there.
Bring the lighting and runway markings up to ICAO standard, if not already done.
Forget the ILS.Put in a GPS approach on all four runways.
Reopen some of the old grassed-over hardstands as helipads.
Expand the existing ramp.
Modernise the Tower.
Then move down camp and flatten any building not up to modern H&S standards.
Build a hangar for corporate jets and offer hangarage at a lower rate than Weston.
Build a small GA terminal on the south side and open it to weekend flying club use.
Tell the dreamers that the runway is too short for constant use of fighters without refitting it with arrestor gear, gravel runoffs,etc.Far better to get it Cat II approved, as a minimum.

how much would the runway need to be extended by to allow modern fighters to operate from there?!would the corps have enough additional ground to extend onto, or would they need to buy land of people that would possibly be in the way of a new runway?!

This is a prime airfield on the west side of the city in the future/cargo/civilan operations will take place here,because dublin airport will not be able to expand any further,hence baldonnel will be used and the furture of the airfield secure.
