Royal Navy helicopters in Ireland
« on: February 09, 2006, 08:31:39 am »
In November 1948 two Sikorsky Hoverfly 1s came to Ireland to assist in a hydrographic survey of the Irish coast. They were based for a time at Gormanston. One of the pilots was Lt (A) Ken Reed, the CO of 705 NAS (he would later become a test pilot for Westlands). On 21.5.50 one of the helicopters crash landed in the churchyard of the C of I at Youghal , this was FT837 flown by Lt Powell. Then between 1.3.51 and 9.4.51 a Dragonfly HR.1, flown by Lt Taylor also came over. Does anyone have information about any of this? If you want to contact me by e-mail it is gcwarner@hotmail.com
Thank you.
