Hi Tony
there was a Fouga engine in the Apprentice hangar which we were told had come from 3-KE (no one ever called it 221 as it never flew in the fleet and never wore the number. Giving an active registration to someone else's junk was a joke), so we were never allowed to dismantle it for practise.I was also reliably told that the only thing preventing 3-KE from flying was that some of the engine frames were bent from the belly-landing and it would have required a major rebuild to fix, hence it being struck off.

Hi GttC,
Yes I am sure that an engine was supplied and it is possible that it had been in the Fouga 3-KE, but I did not see it in the Noratlas. The log book for 221 AKA 3-KE specifically stated that it was less engines. It was a long practice to allocate serials to aircraft relegated and or procured for TTS, going back to the Hurricanes these were in the "A" series eg A3 etc.

Odd, 3-KE sounds like an Austrian mil reg. All their Alouettes have similar reg and would have been about the same vintage. Just a thought.

It kinda weird, French serials. I believe 3-KE is a serial it got when it was with a unit. When a plane goes to a different unit, it gets another serial. Also French A/C have a civil reg together with their mil reg. I could be wrong, but that's how it's in my head '<img'>

Hi all
It was the third aircraft of whatever unit had "KE" as it's identifier.In French practise, the same number was painted on the instrument panels.These numbers lasted on the Irish Fougas instrument panels for a very long time.Also, most Fougas were based at OTUs and not allocated to individuals or squadrons.Also, single Fougas were issued as "hacks" to transport and fighter squadrons or in small groups at Wing level for staff continuation training or in communications flights.

Not quite that simple, while 3-K£ may just have been the third aircraft of SLVSV de 3 EC at Nancy, some time  earlier that aircraft was with the Groupment D'Instruction 312 at Salon-de- Provence and coded as 312-TY. It also served with other units and also at one time with the Air Attache at Stockholm. After its landing with the wheels tucked in, it went to the EAA601 at Chateaudin (MU)
