AW 139 Wolfhound?

Hi all

Just heard, from another forum, that because the IAC are the first to use the AW 139 in a military version they have been given the pleasure of naming it.  Seems that it maybe called the Wolfhound.

Sorry guy's but Wolfhound is already taken.

It first was used bij USAFE F-15C/D's on Soesterberg AFB with the 32nd TFS.
The Squadrons logo was a wolfhound ( Disney character) since WWII.
In the 50's they were based in The Netherlands and stayed there untill the mid '90's.

Since then No. 300 SQN RNLAF, flying the AS532U2 Cougars, use the Wolfhound quit often as tactical name and/or callsign.

I believe that the name Wolfhound is the name that will be given to the military version of the AW 139, like the CH-47 is called the Chinook rather than a callsign or squadron name.  The F-15s were still called Eagles.  Forgive me if my understanding of this is totally wrong, but the IAC have callsigns already assigned to the 139s that I would think would remain.

I'm not 100% sure, but the general callsigns that I hear here in the west have begun with Charlie and the allotted aircraft number.  Hence the Casa's are Charlie 252 and Charlie 253, One of the Dauphins was Charlie 247 I seem to remember, so I would presume that the callsign for the latest 139 would be Charlie 276.  Callsigns would have to have been assigned though as they are flying around the country.  Will keep an ear close to the scanner the next time I see or hear one over this side of the country and will post it.  Someone else maybe better informed to provide this info and I am quite willing to be corrected if necessary.

Wolfhound is a great name and there is no other aircraft with that name.  Squadron names and callsigns maybe, but not a formal aircraft name.

I like wolfhound ... strong Irish imagary and keeps with a long tradition of naming helicopters after animals ...

Hi Guys,
I like the name Wolfhound but for me it conjours up thoughts of landlords hunting Irish red deer before cutting down the forests for the home fleet.
Coupled to that the only Irish military wolfhound connection I can find is as a mascot with the RIR which although well stocked with ex pats is a BA unit.
On a more zooilogical note they are bl**dy expensive to own and feed and have a relatively short life span.
Ahh only messin, it would be a cool name.

 I understand that the AW139s use "Alfa Whisky" for domestic operations.

Dauphin was actually the name used for the French Prince.

Dolphin was the name assigned to the US built variants.
