Air Corps Air Firing Pictures
« on: September 26, 2008, 03:40:18 pm »
Hi Guys,

I recently spent a day with the Flying Training School of the Air Corps as they prepared their PC-9 trainers for air firing practise using their .50 inch gun pods. Unfortunately I couldn't make it when they were firing the rockets so I've got no piccies of that.

I'll give you a teaser shot for now (I'm holding off on the rest for an article in Flying In Ireland), this shot shows a pair of PC-9's returning to the ramp after undergoing EOR checks where all safety pins were put back in the pods & pylons.

Regards,

Frank.

Very observant FiSe,

Yes, that is a remove before flight tag you see, there are a few in fact. All will be revealed when the article is published, I'm finishing it off right now, the plan is to have it in the January 2009 issue of Flying In Ireland.

Regards,

Frank.

P.S. Thanks FF!

hi there
The flagged pin is also known as the "last chance" pin, as it is removed just before the aircraft move onto the runway. It's to prevent inadvertant ground firing. :)

There are eight pins c/w flags, put in place when each aircraft returns from its air firing sortie, one in each gun, one in each rocket pod and one in each pylon.

Hi Guys,

Thanks for all the comments & feedback, sorry for the delay in posting the follow up shots, was waiting for the pictures to be published in a magazine first.
