Alouette202 in new home
« on: August 23, 2009, 09:56:25 pm »
The former Air Corps Alouette III 202 is now happily "tucked in" beside Wessex XR517 at the Ulster Aviation Society Museum at the former WWII RAF airfield at Long Kesh (and one time known as the Maze). Visited there on Saturday for their open day and a very impressive colection of aircraft and artifacts is to be seen. The collection is housed in one of the last two remaining hangars. Well worth a visit.

Hi Tony,

Thanks for the picture. Just out of curiosity, what other aircraft are on display in that museum?

Frank.

When they were at their previous home at Langford Lodge there was a Grumman Wildcat (under restoration after recovery from Lough Neagh) a Buccaneer, Vampire T.11, Sea Hawk, Tucano and a Short 330 among other types.  The accommodation at Langford was quite cramped so perhaps Long Kesh will be somewhat better in that regard.

Hi Frank,
I have noted the following in the museum or more correctly Heritage Centre,
de Havilland Vampire T11 WZ549,  BAC Jet Provost T3 XM414,  Short Tucano G-BTUC,  Short 330 G-BDBS.
Grumman Wildcat JV482,  Hawker Seahawk FB 3 WN108,  Wessex HC 2  XR517,  Robinson R22B G-RENT.
Hawker Siddeley Buccaneer S 2B XV361, Team Himax 1700R G-MZHM, Short Sherpa G-14-1, The Tucano has a civil reg as it was a Brazilian built airframe and did not enter service with the RAF.

The collection was, as Short finals noted, at Langford Lodge which was ideal and accessable but they had to vacate the site, consequently some of the exhibits are in a state of re assembly but they are getting there. Also as SF further noted the Wildcat is still under restoration but progressing and will be a fine exhibit when completed.

There is also a fine collection of models and memorabelia and a library that you could spend many hours browsing and hopefully the collection will at some time be available for research purposes.
As I said well worth a visit and well done to all concerned.
