Old habits creeping back in....
« on: June 05, 2003, 12:04:30 pm »
Hi Guys,

There are a few post's on this board that are, we'll say, not nice.

The old habits of slagging people off and getting people's backs up are creeping back in again.

Now while I set up this board for people with an interest in the Air Corps to discuss things related to the Air Corps, and I appreciate the fact that all of you use this board for this purpose, can we please refrain from the likes of accusing someone of being racist because they refer to the Italians as "olive oil lovers", the comment was light hearted and not meant to be offensive, yet the person that made the racist accusation had a post with "God Bless Ireland, God Bless America!" in it, other people would find that offensive.

If that's the case then do you find the "Spud Missile" joke offensive?

The above examples are just the tip of the iceberg, so can we please refrain from dragging this board down, if something really, really offends or bothers you please report the post to me or send me an email / private message and I'll look into it, but please don't go in head first and accuse someone of being X, Y or Z.

Keep it clean, we all know some people on this board like to talk a lot or are in fantasy land but please bite you lip rather than launch at them, just ignore the post.

Saying all that though, thanks to all of you for using the board and this site, it'g good to see some people still have an interest in the Irish Air Corps.

Regards,

Frank.

Point taken Frank but I disagree!!  If you are Italian or married to one then the the expression "Olive Oil Lovers" is a racist comment. Irish people have  sued successfully  in the UK for being called "Mick", "Paddies" etc under UK racist legislation - and rightly so!!  Have a read through our own anti racist legislation and see what I mean!!

"God Bless Ireland" is a patriotic expression not a racist comment!!

What is a CQSW?
While we're at it would you like my home address, PIN number?
Why don't you just drop it for once.
Fmolloy and others will vouch for me.

If you are athiest or agnostic, you could find the phrase"god bless Ireland" as offensive and secular. It contributes to the notion that Ireland is a nation of christians only, which it is not.

A Patriotic expression to me would be "I Love Ireland".

Perhaps we should consider discussing just aircrafts and the Air Corps.
However, despite my many differences with Imshi, I find him vastly less irritating certain others on this board, particularly those who imagin their occupations rather then actually do 'em.

I like you Sealion, we'll keep you, I am the Boss!!!  '<img'>

Seriously though, FF I accept your point about some people finding certain things offensive, what's funny or harmless to me is next to murder for other people.

As I said earlier, if anyone finds a post offensive let me know and I'll sort it out or even send the person in question a private message, they can edit their own messages, but please don't start a slagging match in public, I don't want the board to become a laughing stock and I don't think any any of you want that either.

All I'm trying to do is protect the integrity of the board, and of the quality of the posting.  Is a bit of good manners too much to ask for?

Cheers.

The question of whether or not a comment or indeed anything else is racist does not turn on whether the source intended it/or not to be racist, rather it depends on whether the subject finds it offensive and whether or not the offence is seen to be based on the subjects ethnicity. Sometimes the whole area is a bit grey.

One thing is certain though, in all cases the ultimate arbiter of what is or is not racist is never the individual who started the controversy.

On a slightly different note: As a regular visitor Frank, great board - thanks for the effort you put in.

Frank if you want, I can write you up a few guidelines on what is considered as racist comment under Irish law.
No Italian I've ever met has gotten that upset over some silly condiment related comment.
