SuperBowl 2011 Heads Up Tonight
« on: February 06, 2011, 10:54:38 pm »
The US Navy will be doing a fly-over at Super Bowl XLV tonight ( Irish time just before 11:20 ) I presume right after the Anthem ends.

The plan is for four F/A-18s ( Super Hornets I believe ) and one spare, flying all the way from NAS Oceana in Virginia.

Bit of Controversy about it here: http://www.khou.com/news/texas-news/Super-Bowl-flyover-costs-taxpayers-450000-115109249.html

"The U.S. Navy says the cost to bring the formation of four planes, plus a backup, to North Texas is $109,000 in fuel. According to Department of Defense tables, the entire cost will be more than $450,000, based on the operational cost of the F-18 aircraft and the number of hours the pilots will fly. The same kind of F-18 fighter operates out of the Joint Reserve Base in Fort Worth, less than 20 miles from the stadium."

Im sure the USN will say its an experience for a NavEX, I also doubt the Hornets will be able to fly that duration without a top up from a tanker.

I believe the Squadron based closer is VMFA-112 at NAS Fort Worth.
