Labour Party leader Pat Rabbitte has claimed that any further cutbacks in the Air Corps could end up creating a false economy. Mr Rabbitte was reacting to the news that the Government has cancelled the purchase of five medium-lift helicopters for the Air Corps. The Labour leader, who met representatives of the Defence Forces today, said the cancellation was a clear breach of commitments made in a white paper on defence three years ago. He added that existing cutbacks had already affected staff morale and warned that further "down-sizing" could undermine the Air Corps as a whole.

as always ,berties needs come first !!

Does anyone find it strange that Mr. Rabbitte has only discovered this now? I know we complain about politicians but surely this report is inaccurate.

My understanding was that alternative ways to procure MLHs were being studied, however, I've heard nothing to say that a method had been decided on and the deal abandoned again.

I think this is old news. I dont believe the government made any further comment on the Medium lift helis since the deal was deferred on financial grounds(and the fact that they were going to be sued by eurocopter).
AFAIK the tender process was re advertised, and the whole thing started over, this time to account for offsets.

The second tender was apparently cancelled at the same time ass the LTV, and BAP replacement.
