What if.....

I also posted this on IMO today,

Over the last couple of days, there has been a number of commercial flights that have requested military escorts. Only today a BA flight requested Dutch military escort after the flight was diverted to Schipol.

We can not honestly say that the current PC9's can be asked to over this if it was requested by a commercial airliner. As Shannon is the last stop from Europe to the US, we need to get some serious "Fast Jet" cover.

We may have to get something that was rumoured a couple of months ago, regarding Dutch or Belgian jets based in Ireland.

Just my couple of cence worth.

Hi firstly everyone here as I am a new poster, although I have been 'lurking' for some time reading peoples posts on a variety of topics.

In reply to the need for jets in the events of emergency surely Ireland which is a resonably well of country can afford a small fleet of mid-range jets to protect it's airspace. A fleet of 10-12 jets does not seem unrealistic to me, I know Ireland spends a very low percentage of GDP on defence generally.

I also know this is a well worn topic here, but what roughly would be the cost of such a fleet of jets approximately.

Hi Fouga,

I  am from London and am second generation Irish, I started looking at this site and some others due to my father having served in the Defence Forces in the 1950's in the Curragh which aroused my curiosity. I generally look at the site once or so a day and thought why not post to it as well though  I cannot make any claim to be an expert in aeronautical matters  '<img'>

Hi Sea Wolf. I once heard an Officer of the IAC state that a fleet of 8 Hawk Trainers would quadrouple the Air Corps fuel bill overnight, so there is one elevated cost straight away. Welcome to the site!

SW most of us are not Aero Jockeys either just enthusiasts and some are serving or were Serving in the Air Corps now and Army Reserve or other areas of the Irish Defence Forces but we all share a fondness for the Air Corps and anything on aviation in general. Im a Reservist as im sure quite a few here are also! Again welcome aboard! '<img'>
