Now i know that EICK is Cork and EICM is Carnmore etc etc but 2 have been bothering me, they are...

EIDW.
EIME.

Now i know EI is Ireland etc but for Dublin what does the DW stand for? And why is ME on the end of the Baldonnel ID? Would it not have been better to call it EIBL? (Baldonnel)

The codes that you asked about are known as ICAO (International Civil Aviation Organization) codes.

The ICAO (International Civil Aviation Organization) 4-letter airport indentifier codes uniquely identify individual airports worldwide. They are used in flight plans to indicate departure, destination and alternate airfields, as well as in other professional aviation publications.

Usually the first two letters of ICAO codes identify the country. In the continental USA, however, codes normally consist of a 'K' followed by the airport's 3-letter IATA (International Air Transport Association) code.

The ME in EIME stands for Mhic Easmuinn (Casement), NN in EINN is shaNNon, CK in EICK is CorK. This system is prevelent in Irish Airports, but I dont know about elsewhere.

Casement is Baldonnel. Baldonnel is the name of the area where Casement Aerodrome is located.

For some reason I think I remember EIDW being referred to as Dublin West on the old irishaviation.net forum. It's more like Dublin North and slightly west!

for detailed airfield information worldwide. In some countries the codes give a clue to the airfield name but in others e.g. the UK they don't, as a rule.

As i recall (from the dim recesses of my memory) there used to be an aerodrome somewhere on or about what is now the main flightpath into dublin (over portmarnockish area)
so going back to when they would have been both little aerdromes, that might be where the dublin west comes from.
I think i saw this in that big massive book about irish aviation in easons (didnt buy as didnt have trailer to bring it home)
