He Frank,

Thanks for the info.
I'll be in Ennis, Clare later on the year.
Let's meet up for a pint of GUINNESS.  '[:sus:'
I think the anual oyster-festival might be a good idea

Guinness ':cool:'

Not really. The runway leads almost straight into the sole hanger (where the dauphin used to be kept).. as far as I can remember

Nibog,

welcome on board !!!

No ATC---------------> No landings
No technical support--> No landings
No fire-crew----------> etc, etc, etc

What is the operational status of Finner Camp anyway?

Is it an army barracks or totaly deserted?

Guinness ':cool:'

there has never been an ATC in finner as far as im aware infact im sure there never was as i remember an article in the donegal democrat in 2001 i think it was and col.ralph james of the air corps said there is no ATC and the helis have been flying for years only with radio contact with finner no radar or anything like there is in casement!so the cessnas could still land.
above and beyond

Surely if there are 'X's painted at the end of the runway that seals its status for fixed wing aircraft, similarly at Gormanstown?

When it comes avaition dont believe anything you read in that paper, they once said that the S61 couldn't land at Sligo airport because it was to big.  '<img'>

There use to be air traffic control at Finner i use to hear them on the scanner all the time. Years ago I heard a RAF sea king passing over head coming back from a rescue chating to the guys in the tower.
I dont suffer from insanity, i enjoy it

Even if they had no ATC the Corps would have been talking to grunts on the ground via Sincgars right? Arent all IAC aircraft fixed to talk to ground Soldiers etc as the IAC is a branch of the Army or has that changed with the new Aircraft?

A FISO service used to be provided by Signals staff. Not ATC.
The Restricted area R22 was put there to protect SAR Heli deployment. There's no tech support now, but there was when the Dauphin was stationed there. When the Unimog Fire truck & crew were removed that was the end of it. The runwat itself is ok, but the support services are not there and so it cannot be used.
