Hi all
The story I heard, from ex-RSM Bobby Gallagher, was that he and his fellow apprentices were marched up to the dump, where the Hurricanes were parked, and issued picks and shovels. They were ordered to smash up the Hurris and the Masters and not to attempt to leave until they were finished. They were warned not to attempt to take souvenirs. This is supposed to have happened in 1945.
There were two dumps, the main one which stretched from the Pyrotechnics shed to the windsock at the corner of the hedge, about 200 yards distant. Most of that ground is now built over. The second dump was at the back of the hangar, formerly Maritime, where the engine test cell now stands. They stored the Chipmunks there after they were taken out of service. Also, a shed in the back row, alongside the school, held some scrap, such as the hulks of several Link trainers.
Perhaps the bosses might be persuaded to allow a metal detector to be used for a look around.
