Main gate.
« on: May 22, 2003, 06:18:53 am »
I know if I was in charge of Casement Aerdrome, I would certainly  build a better main gate.

My idea is simple- A big sign that reads Casement Aerdrome, Baldonnel. Head quaters of the Irish Air Corps.

I would have on either side of the gate- A fouga, and a Vampire on display.

The bottom line is it would be great for motivation and great for the people to see. '<img'>  ''

While im all for improving morale here at the "AIRBASE" ( Does sound better than Aerodrome).....if the Aircorps Managment did go ahead with such a plan, my only question is who would maintain these airframes..ie Cleaning, Keeping the presentaion of these gleaming at the main gate!,

i was just wondering? K.

Seriously IM you do like to start your new topics don't you!!
Anyway,I believe I've said it before,no space at the front gate for fouga or vampire, not alone both.
There already is a sign type thing with the title of the base on it,in english and irish I believe,It looks well.
Plus the fact that well the road access to the base is pretty narrow also.
But I've only been there twice, maybe I'm wrong!
I can't believe we're talking about the front gate......!

Good points Irish Marine and Lude,
My main concern is the state of the road from the N7 to the enterence to Casement.  The South Dublin County Council should widen this to a National Primary Route standard!!

Eh, guys, I think you'll find there's plenty of room for a gate guard in the wide courtyard behind the entrance gate itself.  Not sure about two, mind.  But IM's idea is a nice one.

Roadsigns on the N7 would be a good idea to raise profile to the thousands of motorists passing each day.

I agree, there is plenty of room either side of the main gate for a Fouga "gate guardian". (N.B. Not Fouga 220 mind, which should be retained for indoor display, having being the last Fouga in AC use)

A directional sign, on the N7, which reads  "CASEMENT AIR BASE - Home of the Irish Air Corps"  would also be an excellent idea.

Although, perhaps the way things are at present i.e. the debate over the future name of the AC, the lack of an AC Museum etc. are the reasons we have not seen such developments.

Not sure I agree with this gate guard idea, it would probally do away with the visitors parking space I normally park in, don't laugh, sometimes parking, for the unfortunates who work there can be a real pain.
Seriously an aircraft mounted on a pylon there should not cause too much problems, but one thing that would definitly improve the apperance of the base would be the removal of that sad Dove remains to somewhere out of sight.
I belive the N7 is as good as it is going to get at the moment, despite the ravings of f to$$er f, but the road that passes the main gate should have been improved years ago.

What about a sign saying "Welcome to Casement Aerodrome, Home of Army Aviation in the Republic of Ireland" and underneath in small letters it could say "The only Army Aerodrome in the Republic of Ireland" Don't forget IM that there's no need for the Aor Corps to advertise for recruits, there's always a waiting list for people to join up!
