Vampire 185 was was sent to France on board a FAF Transall C-160 FRAZQ on 3 Feb 1978. It had brought the Magister 221 for TTS. The Vampire was in excellent condition and in fact the Squadron CO offered to fly it there but permission was refused.

Hi Fouga23,

Fouga 216 was stored for a while in the open at Cork Airport after it was taken back from Cork Institute of Technology.

The Air Corps gave 4 Fouga's to various Institutes of Technology (IT's) after they were retired for technical training of students.

Aparrently Cork IT were not looking after the aircraft as well as they should have (open to correction here) and it was taken back by the Air Corps, who still owned all the Fouga's.

Fouga 220 is in Carlow IT, and is in excellent condition, everything on the aircraft works, including the engines, it helps when some of the staff are ex Fouga techies!

Photo is attached below, click here to see a larger picture of Fouga 220 in Carlow IT.

Regards,

Frank.

Full marks to Carlow IT.  Is the Vampire in French AF care or some other form of enthusiasts society? What was the French interest in the Vamp ... had they used the type?

is that a dove behind 216 in the hangar?!i think the air corps got a vampire from the french air force for ground crew to learn about and as an instructional airframe(could be wrong here!) and then we sent one to france after we withdrew them from service.i think thats the case anyway!?open to correction.

Pilatus,
Yes that is the fuselage of a Dove in the background and was one of two lying derelict at Cork some years ago. It is not ex Air Corps. Vampire 198  is ex RAF and was acquired for use by TTS (Technical Training Sqn.), the Fouga 221 acquired for TTS was in exchange for Vampire 185 (see my last posting) and was arranged by the French Air Attache.

RMR
There is already a Fouga Magister in the Museum no.219 but 216 looks to be in better condition, despite its sojourn in the open at Cork. None however, can compare with 220 at Carlow, it really looks well.

Perhaps the AC got the instructional Fouga (reg: 3-KE) from the French, in exchange for the Vampire ?

Hi all
With regard to 3-KE,we were strictly forbidden to touch it during our apprentice training,so it was damn all good to us. Incidentally, the Fougas retained their French codes on their instrument panels for many years after their entry into service.
