Hess we never had any F-111 Aardvarks at the Salthill Airshow. Sorry but that claim is false. We had F-15e strike eagles from Lakenheath but NEVER had F-111 Aardvarks.

Hi Fouga,

currently eating humble pie (once you get used to it, it's ok). You're absolutely right, they were F-15s. Somebody once said: "The body has a 35 year warranty", in my case it's the mind. Sorry all.

U.S navy P-3 Orions were frequent weekend visitors to the don during the early 90's. They used to bring the families of American sailors based in Iceland to Dublin on shopping trips. Also, did any of ye know about the S-3 Viking that landed at the don a few days before the arrival of the JFK in '96??
It came in in the early hours of the morning to pick up a couple of Aircorps officers and bring them out to the carrier off Cork somewhere.

GttC,
I think this is the Antonov, former East German Air Force, you mentioned at Baldonnel. I thought that it was  a very nice aircraft and did you notice it had all script in Russian.
Regarding the Ju88 incident all crew survived in fact the pilot Paul Stormer passed away only last December.

Hi again GttC,
You also mentioned the Luftwaffe Hansajet. It think it was one of the more unusual types to visit.

It was great to hear the sound of a Merlin engine even if it had to be in a Mustang seen here at Baldonnel.

Here's a question ..........

What is the longest distance any aircraft has travelled in order to take part in an Irish air show ?

(Incidentially, I recall a USAF Learjet at Abbeyshrule which came from Iceland. I know - not the furthest  '[:sus:' )

BTW, have any Icelandic govt aircraft ever visited Bal/Ireland ?
Icelandic Coast Guard perhaps ?

USAF (Reserve) C141 Starlifter flew from an AFB in New Jersey, demoed at Salthill and returned to New Jersey. The B1 flew longer distances, but not specifically for Salthill. Answer: C141 New Jersey Air National GUard. NJ-Salthill-NJ. 'pilot_cheesy'

I always thought that the Patrouille de France gave a first rate performance at Baldonnel when they visited, even better than the Arrows?

Hi there
Pilatus, it's an FBW HansaJet, which was unusual in that it featured a forward-swept wing.It wasn't a commercial success, so the production run were given/sold to the Luftwaffe, who used them for electronic warfare training for Tornado backseaters and suchlike. Students sit in the cabin and operate equipment that is designed to mimic the kit in the combat jets and attempt to jam radars, decoy SAMs,etc. They could also be used to "sample" other people's radars, for future jamming purposes.
regards

Hi Fouga,

Silver's  original question was: "What is the longest distance any aircraft has travelled in order to take part in an Irish air show ?"
New Jersey - Salthill still stands (C141 Starlifter), the fact that it landed in Shannon after the display for a "splash & dash" & a photo-op is irrelevant.
