Hi Fouga,
I believe the Army received proposals for UAVs in early October. I think these are for mini UAVs for use by the Army and there is no mention of AC involvement. I had heard that the Army were to start testing these soon but I have heard nothing about types on offer or what roles they would be used in. A similar question by myself on Irishmilitaryonline met with resonding silence. If anbody has any info I would be very interested. Its a fascinating area of technology!

Laugh all you like, they have been using them with great success for a while.

Beats waiting for a cessna pilot to get motivated in gormo any day.

Sealion,
On a serious note, are they utilised for live fire exercises or just radar tracking and how effective are they? Do you think they would be of use to the PDF for exercises with the radar based AAA weapons?

would flycatcher and giraffe and navy radars be able to pick up a contact that small or do they tow some sort of small target with a radar beacon on them?

I should have mentioned(i thought it would have been obvious) that it is not used for the ships main armament.

GPMGs, HMGs, Rhein Metall and Gambos are not radar controlled....

Sealion,
How do you judge MPI or accuracy. The sleeve towed by the cessnas contains an accuracy detector. Surely without this you might as well be shooting into thin air unless you hit it. If the object is to hit it then surely this is an expensive way to train on a GPMG.
Also, what is the precieved aerial threat to be engaged by the Navy. I am sure accuracy on floating targets would be much more useful.

With reference to naval UAVs being used as targets for GPMGs etc...This has to be a wind-up of biblical  proportion Nice one Sea lion ! 'pilot_laugh'

Hardly surprising, as it was taken at the Open day in the Naval base.

As for it being a wind up.
