I came across a piece about how the Austrian Air Force use armed PC-7's for air policing operations.

Interesting that we are not the only european country to use armed turboprops for security operations !

What Exactly is the Item on the left I know the first is a Gun/Cannon Pod And the next I presume to be a fuel tank but is the other item some form of FLIR Container (Any Ideas???)

I'd say from left to right you have a rocket pod, fuel tank & gun pod.

Are there Fuel Tanks in service yet with the IAC PC-9Ms or would it ever be likely to see introduction of such an item to the inventory of the IAC PC-9Ms or is there an need for such??

As far as I know that Air Corps PC-9's are not wired / piped for extra fuel tanks and they only have 4 pylons, 2 on each wing, as opposed to 6 for the Austrians or Slovenians.

EDIT: Looks I got my facts wrong, the Air Corps PC-9's are equipped with 6 hardpoints, sorry about that.

The Information i heard once is that the IACs PC-9Ms have the capability if required to operate the Two extra Pylons if it was ever deemed required now maybe i could have heard wrong but that what i beleived we had Hmmm.. Oh what form of Air Policing Tasks have the Austrians PC-7s Conducted would they be similiar to operation such as during operation Mayfly (EU Summit) or for visit of President Bush???

I thought the pc-7's were used for training only, i know a while back they were using pc-6's for aerial reconnassance,phptographs etc,maybe silver can ellaborate from the piece he got the pic from...

well they are just being used now as a stop gap until the eurofighters are delivered!the drakens now i think have finally been retired and they did not lease enough F5s from switzerland so the saab350s and pc7s are also being used!

Our PC9's are plumbed and hardpointed for underwing fuel tanks (we don't have them) or underwing aerobatic smoke generators (we don't have them yet either) as well as the hardpoints for the gun and rocket pods.

THe pod on the wing looks a lot like an anti-tank missile like the Gustav.

I can be mistaken ofcourse but you'll never know with these Austrians 'pilot_grin'

Guinness thats no Gustav its definitly a rocket pod!the pc7 would have no way to guide them even if they were!no radar no infra red tracking system!if you look closely at the covers you can see the shape of the tubes on the pods were the fabric sort of sinks into them!

Why would an aircraft need a radar or infra red system to fire a Gustav round? Give it a sight and it's good to go

Anyway, I've never heard of one being attached to an aircraft, it's range, fact that it carries only one round etc probably wouldnt be best suited

I only said it "LOOKED" like one.
I never heard that one is attached on a plane but Austrians........... You never know 'pilot_laugh'
