Perusing the calendar pics, none of them now explain that odd four ship 3 cessnas and 1 dauphin formation seen over Howth and Maynooth on an afternoon late in August 2005. There was speculation that it might have been a calendar shoot but does not appear to be the case ...

Dont forget that there were thousands of images shot for the calendar with only 13 of them being picked, not all the best ones I might add!!!

There again it may not have had anything to do with a calendar ..

Im afraid it was part of a photo shoot. Its easier to use a heli with a nice wide open door to take shots of formations of other helis or cessnas. The open ramp of a CASA would be used on the PC-9's as they are able to keep up with it.

This is beginning to sound like a very expensive production if all that trundling around was simply to get a few shots for a calendar ...

Yip, you said it. The shots of the lear,GIV and some PC-9 ones were taken while in a 3 ship formation of the above mentioned aircraft. The one on the cover of the Lear over the burran was taken from an inverted PC-9 with the Photographer shooting "UP" through the canopy!!!

i was at my cousins wedding in howth in early september. i saw the formation heading N/NW over howth harbour, the dauphin was directly behind a vic of the cessnas, . the whole formation appeared to continue on that headind as far as i could see, which i reckon was at least 5 miles . perhaps they were heading to gormanston, i cant figure where else they might have been heading to

Dave

I saw the formation over Maynooth heading south just before 1700 in the evening (last Thursday of August), so they clearly did an extended horsehow from Howth up over north county Dublin and Meath.

It was an intriguing formation ... does anybody have definitive knowledge as to what it was all about?

Why are people getting so worked up about a few planes and a chopper flying about?

it was a shoot for the callender. unfortunately the pics weren't used. the formation flew mainly as a 4 ship but the dauphin loosened out at different points for photos. the formation (RED SECTION) left Bal for blessington then low level east of the Dublin Zone to overfly Gormo and get a few shots in the 172's old territory around the Boyne Valley. Even took in Newgrange before heading back west of the Dub zone and maynooth to Bal.
that should clear it up guys. as for it being 'expensive', i think after 30-odd years the 172's have earned 90 mins of east coast domination! 'buttrock'
