Can any of the techies here say whether 4-5000 hours on an aircraft of this type is considered "high mileage"?

Not really.They have spent their service lives being minded like precious stones and having hugely expensive overhauls.They're in fine order, by comparison to any civvie training aircraft.Worth every penny the putative buyer spends on them.

The notice is not very inspiring, is it - a photo or two and a better description of the aircraft might have helped.

Hi all
I'd imagine they'd be sold on an "as is, where is" basis, which is the most common way in aviation.What you see is what you get.Incidentally,in Military use, the engines only have an overhaul life of 1400 hrs,so anyone with a nearly-expired engine had better have E20,000 plus handy for an overhaul.

Interestingly, the Marchetti's are being tendered for sale to be sold 'individually or as one lot' - meaning they are available to private buyers (which should raise a better price per aircraft)!

A bit of common sense in the DoD at last ?!

Perhaps the proceeds of the sale of at least one of the Marchetti's could be donated to the Air Corps Museum Fund ?

Hi Guys,
Just a thought. These aircraft have no civil maintenance history. It is my understanding that to register these aircraft as civilian they will require full overhauls regardless of when the last overhaul took place under the military system.
The only way around this is by getting the aircraft onto a Permit to fly as per Bulldogs etc. There are however two problems here. Firstly as the SF260 is still in serial production I dont believe that you can get it on a permit. Secondly even if you do it will be limited by the Permits regulations. In the UK at least this means no IFR flight amoungest other things.

Most will proably end up in the States and be flown under 'experimental' regs as most private ex-warbirds are there.

Hi all
A couple of points: As far as I know, the Marchetti is only built to order now. There are at least two on the UK register, of which one is a C of A aircraft and the other is Geoffrey Boot's, of Flyer magazine, which is an ex-military one from an African state and op[erates on a Permit.The CAA refused to allow it to be put on the C of A system, despite it being in perfect order, because it had not recieved it's most recent overhaul from the manufacturer.
I agree with the last poster that they will probably end up in America, after the Air Corps have taken out the firing circuits, of course...

SF260 Avco Lycoming overhaul life was extended to 2000 flying hours.
