Any word on either a mid-life upgrade (MLU) to 235-300 standard with new avionics, sensors and FITS, or their replacement with two C-295MPA Persuaders as part of a trad-in deal with CASA that would include one or two 295 airlifters?

Hi all
Could we have a whip-around to buy a model of a Casa 295 for Old Redeye, so as to stop him flogging that subject to death at every opportunity? 'pilot_rolleyes'

I'll have one of them too Gttc if i can have it in 1.76 scale LOL!!

The rumour is yes and yes Old Redeye a party visited CASAs in Spain to discuss the upgrade and the CN295 was discussed but i dont know to what degree the disscussions where on either subjects especially the CN295 at all, but the likes of new more modern FLIR system was disscussed along with the new radar upgrade i think for the CN235s. Thats as much as i know to date on the subject of possible upgrade of the CASAs and of any disscussion on the CN295s.

The FITS is a system entirely developed by EADS CASA that provides the crew, through a number of different sensors (search radar, infrared sensor, TV,etc.), with all the information required for the success of the mission, from maritime (drug trafficking control, illegal immigration, sea rescue, etc.) to antisubmarine warfare.

I didnt know the Casa had any capability in this aspect before, is he just talking about if a sub surfaces, or is there a sonobuoy system installed, or going to be installed? Probably fire them out the back ala the rescue equipment

Blue Max,
I think the answer to that is in the threads title.

It took twelve years (I assume 250 is included) for 2 regional airline type aircraft doing 6-7 hr patrols to reach 20,000Hrs.

1667Hrs per year, 834Hrs per airframe

Thats only one 6 hour patrol for 278 days of each year!

In Canada 3 Pacfic Airlines SKA200s provide 5000Hrs of maritime patrol per year. They clock up 20,000hrs in 4 years!

Not much to celebrate here '<img'>

December 1994 to Feb 2006 is not 12 years.

Get out the calculator again.

Don't forget the occasional use of the CASA as Transport aircraft too. 'duh'

Ahh Yes what an error. Lets be benefical and say 11 years.

Thats 1818 Hrs per Year / 909 Hrs per airframe / yr.

Thats one 6 hr patrol for 303 days of the year.

WOW now I am immpressed. Not!

As you say the CASAs are used for non maritime tasks which lowers this figure again and 1.5 hrs of most patrols are over land. Well worth 35Mil Pounds and now a 12.5 mil Euro upgrade. Give the money to somebody who will do the job properly! 'stir_the_pot'

Sealion,
Do you know if the 20,000hrs includes 250. If it does then the date is 1992. A quick look at Military.ie shows that 252 and 253 had 12,000 hrs flown when that website was started. I doubt very much if they have flown 8,000 hrs since. If the clock does start in 1992 the figures speak for themselves!

In all seriousness, this MPA upgrade is good news, but equally important is what's NOT in the deal.  No pair of C-295's, or even a single CN-235 airlifter.  Either CASA will not or could not satisfy the airlift requirement, or not anytime soon for some reason - maybe next year, or some other company/product is in the running.
* C-27J? Alenia is anxious to make a sale, having lost out to the 295 recently with Portugal, Brazil, Algeria, and not hopeful with Finland. Willing to make a deal to add another customer?
*A new or used/overhauled C-130?
*A multi-role jet in the A-320 class that the GOC mentioned some time ago?  I understand Boeing has or is about to pitch the 737-700C-QC to the government/MOD/IAC.  Interesting.  Carries as much cargo as a 130J and faster over the same distance - though no vehicles - plus 125pax or a palletized MATS configuration: about $US55 million with delivery within a year vs. $US65M and no delivery before 2008 for C-130J. H'mmm.....
