You missed my point Guinness. The animal that is a warthog does not fly, yet a very agile aircraft is named after it.

Following from that, it would not be unusual to name an aircraft after an animal that does not fly.

However, it would have to be an english name because AB will want to use it in the future for international marketing purposes. Bring on the Wolfhound. Better callsign than feckin 'Rainbow'.

Locally they'll just be known as the "139's"  by the lads as they already are. So you wont hear anything other than that from Aircorps personnel cos its stuck now. Same as "Fougas" for the Magisters, "Marchetti's" for the Warriors etc.

You're right, "139" has already stuck with the IAC, no matter if they are eventually rebranded 149's or given a name, but I like "Wolfhound".  Very military and evocative, and it would be good for the IAC and for Ireland to be referenced by every additional military operator of the 139/149, and there will be many over the years because this is an exceptional aircraft with lots of potential.  

Be quick though.  If the US-139 wins the imminent US Arrmy Light Utility Helicopter competition, as it well might, it will get an American Indian tribe name, the tradition for all US Army aircraft.  Hardly Irish.  Decision expected next month on at least 350 aircraft, with many more likely if the USAF signs on as well to replace their UH-1N's as expected.  Competition is Bell 412 (not likely), EC-145 (Likely) and MD-900 Explorer (not a chance).  I'm betting on the 139 Wolfhound.

Other fauna-based suggestions which I don't think have been applied to aircraft to date. Take your pick ... or not:
Tiercel (term used for a male peregrine)
Buzzard (used before?)
Stoat
Torc (Irish for 'wild boar')
Nightjar
Chough
Lapwing
Snipe
Jay
Jackdaw
Magpie
Bonxie (Scottish (?) name for the seabird Great Skua, perhaps better than the Irish colloquialism for it: Shitehawk)
Beaver (Go on, I dare ya)
Shag (its getting worse, I think i'd better stop)

Hi all
How about "HiAce"? The most ubiquitous mode of transport in Ireland, complete with breakfast-roll munching fat driver and job lot of grubby labourers in the back.We could even jam a wedge of old reciepts under the windshield for the proper effect, with the scrawl "also available in camouflage" written in the dirt above the ramp.

Despite your apparent belief that "Beaver" has not been used before, De Havilland Canada got there fifty or so years ago when they used this name for their classic bush-plane, which has seen worldwide military and civilian use.  Furthermore many DHC-2 Beavers are still in use in Canada and the USA.

ok some serious ideas,from a quick search on google:
there is a creature in celtic mythology called Airitech,that's fairly appropriate!
Or 'Scathach', pronounced Skee-ach.a god of war training apparently,taught Cu Chulainn how to kick @rse,so well suited to operations with the ARW.
