The Gripen apperes to be a useful aircraft and would fit into an Irish requirment for a serious combat aircraft, should such a requirement ever surface.
But it seems that current civil service policy is that only new equipment should be bought, however, it would be difficult to class thes fine aircrafts as secondhand.
Ireland, no jets, no future!

hey Guinness i know its a pipe dream but still we can always wish!copy the link there in my first post!in the link it talks about how the swedish airforce has cut its requirement for gripens from 170 to 100 so just the czech air force with all its surplus L159s the sweedes will have 70almost new, even some new unused gripens fresh off the line and rather than scrapping them they would sell them dirt cheap!a squadron of 8-12 aircraft would be really handy! shame we're not in a position to take them even if they were offered at a knock down price. can you imagine the fuel bill?

i do think every nation which can afford fighter aircraft, should have them, because every nation should have the means to police and defend its territory to the best of its ability.

ireland can afford them, but there's no will.

long term, i do see fighters eventually being in the air corps, but it will take an EU directive, or a seriously decling security situation to make it happen.

what i dont understand is the continued lack of any means of air defence over 20000ft...

i can see a need for fixed wing fighters, and i've heard all the arguements for getting them and in some ways i agree but choppers, and lots more of them would be 100 times more usefull to us,get choppers before fighters!!

Well get them both  '<img'>

It could be an old news for some of you, but I've heard - rumour, that Czechs are seriously talking about few more Grippens /6-7?/ and, now for sure, they are just getting more EC 135's for Police Air Service use only. In total it'll be 8 brand new EC 135's before the end of this year...

I think, there is some inspiration somewhere overthere, or am I wrong???

I'll pass on the messege to our Minister of Defence .
I rather have Gripens than the JSF in our Air Force

The JSF programm is on the slopes anyway so  'thumbsdown'  the Yanks and let's buy a "real "jet for the RNLAF.
