this sounds like a real good idea?how about selling model aircraft that IAC fly(past and present) but with IAC markings.you rarely see them around and i know i would buy an example of each aircraft anyway!

I make and build plastic kits both as a hobby and to earn a few sheckles here and there.
A number of Aer Corps machines are available in plastic kit form and few are available in die-cast  and desk-top display form.

The die-cast / desktop display items are expensive and can be rare.
The plastic stuff is generally eaiser to get in terms of the specific types. It's the markings that are hard to come by.
For example:
If you want to make the Tr.IX Spitfire in Aer Corps markings, you need to buy the Hasegawa 1/48 or 1/72 Spitfire MkIX kit  (or an equivalent by another manufacturer) and then buy the Brigade models conversion kit to make the two-seater. The conversion kit comes with Irish Aer Corps markings.
Markings/decals can be provided by Max Decals, based in Ireland. Some of his sheets are now out of production, but he releases updated sheets from time to time.
To the best of my knowledge, the following are or were available:

In plastic|:
Fouga Magister by Fonderie. You need Max Decals sheet to complete anIAC machine. This kit may be tricky to track down and can be pricey. It's multi-media, meaning it has resin, vac-form, plastic and some metal parts. Built one and have one in the stash....

Spitfire Tr.IX: Need the Hasegawa MkIX kit as the "donor" to use the Brigade models conversion. Includes markings for IAC machine.

Hurricanes Mk1 and IIc: Hasegawa are the best, not always the cheapest. I don't think that there are markings available.

Vampire T55: Hobbycraft did a kit in 1/48. Accuracy not great and you need Max Decals for the markings.

Seafire: Airfix is the best bet here. Markings on the MAX Decals sheet.

Fairey Battle: Mulit-media kit made by Classic Airframes. Careful which one you pick up as you need the target-tug boxing if you want IAC  markings (kit no.430)

Gloster Gladiator: Roden have done a decent Gladiator in 1/48 but again, Max Decals are needed for an IAC machine.

PC-9: I have heard that there is a 1/72 resin kit out there. Markings for IAC recently included on an updated Max Decals sheet.

Marchetti: Also avaialble in a 1/48 resin kit, no sure about the decals.

the Dauphin is avaialble as well, but Max Decals only do markings for it in 1/72.
Also out there are kits for the EC-135, the Miles Magister, the Alouette and the Gazelle are out there too, but can be hard to find in 1/48 scale but seem to be readily avaialble in 1/72

And that's the thing, 1/72, the most popular of the modelling world, most of the above have been kitted. The main problem are the markings...Max Decals have provided most of them , but usually as short runs.
Some of the WW1 types, like the SE5 are out there as well as the Martynsyde.
On my shelf, I have built a Miles Magister, a Fouga Magister, a Vampire, a Mk1, MkIIb and MkIIc Hurricane,a Seafire and a Tr.IX Spitfire. I plan to make the Battle, the Puma we had leased and the PC-9, IF I can get my hands on it.

The civilian Aer Lingus stuff is better represented. Talk is that Airfix were had just released a boxing of the Super Constellation  (08008) just prior to them being dragged into administration that included markings for an Aer Lingus Connie.

So, the Irish Stuff is out there. It's just not so easy to get it all together.

Inside a recent issue of Aeroplane Monthly is an ad for die-cast models (Corgi?), including good old "243".It's about £350!

Its Cessna 243, i saw that add months ago and spent a good few hours on the site and cant find the bugger! Dont think its Corgi i think its the Aircraft Model Shop thats located in most UK Airports?

It would indeed be nice to see an idea like that coming to fruition. The problem is in getting the correct information for the colour schems, not so much for the modern and or recently withdrawn aircraft as for the past types. You recently mentioned that you had visited the Air Corps Museum and I am sure that you saw the fantastic collection of model in the glass cases. A number of these are finished in Air Corps "finishes". Unfortunately all of them finished this way are incorrect, a lot of work would hve to be done by whoever undertook such a project otherwise it would be unproductive and costly. This is not to say that it oculd not be achived.

In relation to Liams post above,the 1/48 scale Fonderie Minature Fouga is available from Squadron in the US.(www.Squadron.com).
I bought this kit a while back and it, with approximately 30 other kits of former and current IAC aircraft, is still awaiting construction.Currently in the process of trying to build a 1/72 vacform kit of the Casa and then starting a 1/48 resin kit of the Warrior.
Managed to get my hands on a resin kit in 1/72 of PC9 last year and it builds quite nicely (tried to find the packaging to source the manufacturers name but cant just locate it at present but I believe they are in Eastern Europe)
Best of luck with sourcing the other kits mentioned,

Classic Airframes also do the Vampire trainer in 1/48 and it is easy enough to pick up on the Internet, although it is not cheap.  It can be worth buying from the USA, as even with postage costs you can save substantially on European and UK prices.

Czech Master also have a nice resin kit for a Vampire T.11 in 1/72 scale.(Kit reference :CMR No.116).By carefully selecting decals from a number of MAXDECALS sheets and from the usual left over decals from the spares box it is possible to build a pretty reasonable kit.

Shorts fINALS: The Classic Airframes kit (1/48) is new this year I think. I didn't think they had brough out the two-seater just yet. I'll have to look into it.
What T.Kearns says is correct tho. The finished kits can look a little odd if hte correct research isn't carried out, such as getting the correct "green" color for the Spitfires and Seafires.

But I think the biggest problem are the actual markings themselves. They are the hardest to currently come by as ebay and the like are also options for out of production kits suitable for builds of IAC  aircraft. The vac-form CASA is a fine example of this. Expensive and can be tricky to find.
I have Revell's 1/32 Puma "BGS" which is suitable to build the Puma the IAC / Garda leased some years back. I believe it's now out of production.
Buying from America can sometimes be your only option, but be aware that you can occasionaly get caught out on import duty / taxes that can negate the cheap price afforded to you wit hthe whole currency thing. There is no import duty / tax if you buy from a shop based in Europe / EU.

I have to say my experience of purchasing kits from the US mirrors your own.Sometimes you can be lucky and at others it works our very expensive.
You had mentioned the kit for the Casa... This kit manufactured by Broplan can be sources from Aeroclub-models.com in the UK.(REf.BP7261 1/72 Casa/IPTN CN235M) at the cost of GBP£25.49.As you say when you allow for the sterling rate conversion and postage it is quite expensive.At this price you can only have one shot at making the kit and makes you very careful when removing the vacformed parts from the backing medium!!!!
