Mainland Air Force = Royal Air Force

Someone being sarcastic I think

OK OK OK

I'm given to a little sarcasm myself from time to time but the term mainland has an uncomfortable (I'm sometimes prone to understatement) historic ring for many.

If we are talking about the RAF lets say the
RAF. Not a bad bunch at all !!!

Like I said earlier...

The pilot was definitely RAF, like I said, it was nothing official on the part of the Air Corps, just a photo mission with a guy in the back who just happened to be a member of the Air Corps.

Yes you did say earlier, which gave rise to the following questions....

Was the GIB on board the Hawk as a private individual or as a member of the IAC?

If he was there in the latter capacity why on earth did he feel it necessary to post his vid footage on you_tube?

??

Hi all
Exchange visits happen all the time.Either an aircraft is sent or just personnel are sent to keep abreast of new developments.Nothing "secret squirrel" about it; just maintaining friendly relations with the Mainland Air Force.

And there was me thinking that the mainland airforce was the Luftwaffe, or mabye Armée de l'Air, or at a push Voyenno-vozdushnye sily Rossii ... but hardly our island neighbours.

Oh well, that's me told!

Either way ... lucky bugger .. how does one as a private individual blag a back seat ride in one of Her Majesty's Hawks then?

Right...I'll put this one to rest once and for all!!!!

The Guy in the back was "ME!!!" Their you are!! You all know who I am now!! I was staying on Valley because there had been a photo competition for the Valley Aviation Society which I had won, I am a  member also. And yes I was there as a member of the Irish Air Corps because I was promoting the Calendar('06) at the AGM and presenting a framed print to the society for inviting us to the "Photocall"! I had got to know the OPs officer at Valley thru the photocall and the society and he offered me a back seat in the Hawk!! And just for the record I was wearing my Aircorps flying suit but had to remove it in order to don the vast amounts of layers, emersion suit, g suit, etc etc...for winter fast jet flying. Dress for where you might end up not where you are as we say!!!!!!

The Video was put on "You Tube" by my snotty nosed nephew without me knowing and I just left it there not knowing it was gonna cause such a debate! It was only a short clip as I didnt want to risk holding the camera at low level as we were pulling up to 6G for seven seconds at one stage and it rarely goes below 3G winding thru the valleys.
I have the complete flight thru the HUD but it was 8MM tapewhich I put on DVD but quality is crap due to old tape and mist at low level.
So there you are all the mystery gone!! I flew in a Hawk, get  over it or join the Air Corps LOL 'pilot_laugh'

Hi all
Clearly, my reference to the mainland Air Force roused a few sleeping irony-deficient republicans.Guess you missed that little event in Croker then...PD got the Hawk flight because he was a Military person. If you really want to find out how hard it is to get a backseat gig as a pure civvy, read the Military Aircrew section of Pprune. They are running a current thread on the same subject.

What on earth is a sleeping irony-deficient republican and do I need to see a doctor?

Hi Tony.
After your recent "D-check", the last person you need to see is another doctor...the irony deficient sleeping republicans are those people who profess hatred of Britain/England, when it suits them (such as when certain anthems are played) yet support English football teams, buy english products, have lots of relatives living over there, etc.Funnily enough, they never seem to hate the Welsh or Scots, whose ancestors would have had an equally bloody history in Ireland. They can be found in pubs or canteens everywhere and there are a few in the Don,too.
