Fouga 219 flew twice in 1998 with no tip tanks fitted. Picture is on page 75 of the Air Corps book "The Irish Air Corps celebrates 100 years of flight".

Maybe Tony Kearns has a picture he can post?

Hi all
The Fougas were "G"-limited without tip tanks and so essentially useless for aerobatics and the reduced range meant that they were equally useless for long cross-country flights. One of the reasons for the need to remove the tanks was an event whereby a clot, guarding the Fougas (because the hangar door was jammed open), decided to drive the little electric tug, despite never having driven one before. He managed to knock out four aircraft by "pinballing" off the tip tanks and/or nose cones of the unlucky aircraft. This accident managed to consume the entire stock of spare tanks and led to the operation without tanks, of 219, as it was next due for scheduled maintenance.

'yikes'  Wouldn't want to be in that guys shoes! We had an accident like that once. In the old days our national aerobatic team "the red devils" were preforming at an airshow. They were all parked neatly on the flightline when another aircraft taxied by (I think a caravelle) and knocked all the periscopes of the cockpits with its wingtip!
