Did anybody hear about the possible conversion of Eithne's heli deck "for other uses" (whatever that may be) ?

Silver,
Sorry for the delay in getting back to you about the TV programme on the Naval Service - it was one of those busy weeks!

The programme is called The Irish Navy  - First Fifty Years and was shown on RTE 1 Television on the 14/11/1996.  A great programme with loads of old footage from the Corvettes, Minesweepers, Deirdre et al, the Claudia affair.  Excellet footage of a dauphin crew being briefed on the LE Eithne prior to their departure on patrol plus communication back and forth!

Let hope that there will be more of these type of programmes, perhaps even on our great Air Corps!

Kind regards,
FiannaFail ':<img:'>

Interesting to note that the Belgian Navy operate 3 x Alouette's from one of their ships, as part of their 'Navy Flight'.
They have been deployed as far away as Indonesia !

Have any of our Alouette's ever operated from L.E. Eithne ?

When the decision was made to get the Dauphin, I remember flying over Haulbowline and Cork harbour and seeing the Eithne being built, I remember thinking how small it looked. that's when I decided I'd had enough of Air Corps life, 3 weeks out in the Atlantic in that little tub? Some of the lads went down to Cork and had a guided tour, they found out that the Air Corps lads were to be billetted right up in the pointy end! Enough said! Now, I've encountered plenty of bad weather on the Ferries across the Irish Sea, maybe for 3 hours or so, but I joined the Air Corps, not the Navy, and 3 weeks of bad weather......As it turned out the heli crews didn't spend that much time at sea, I joined British Airways and so the story goes.... anyway I showed a photo of an air Corps dauphin on the deck of the Eithne to one of my workmates who was in the Fleet Air Arm, on Frigates (he served in the Falklands campaign) he made the comment .."that's quite a large heli. deck!", well the Eithne isn't as big as a Leander Class Frigate so maybe that's why the Dauphins didn't spend as mich time at sea as was first thought! (Incidentally, on that visit to Haulbowline I met up with an old schoolmate who was the Bowsun on the LE Aisling, I had a great day, guided tour of his Ship and now I've got a daughter called Aisling in memory!)

A quote from the IMO board regarding L.E. Eithne -

Quote
As regards flight ops, a helicopter will never land on Eithne again (Barring emergencys) until the NS [Naval Service] have their own air wing, those aer corps boys like to get home for their tea and don't like being on nasty ships where you can't play golf after work.

What do you think about that statement guys ?

Moreover, What are the chances of a NS air wing (or even NS pilots operating AC helis) ?

IAS,
I'll let you know if I have a result with the NS video.

John K,
You have just highlighted why we need to train Naval Service pilots if we are ever to successfully operate a naval air wing.

Why do AC pilots not want to go to sea, it is no problem in other countries defence forces. Are our pilots snobs, or just unwilling to go outside there safe net of Baldonnel. As someone else pointed out the Eithne with Dauphin on board with rockets and painted a decent colour would have been ideal for the Liberia mission. It would be ideal for lots of UN missions. But that would be smart forward thinking, which is something our Military chiefs and DOD sometimes lack. As for the DOD and Minister they lack it all the time.

I recall reading on IMO that the 'anchorage' points on Eithne  for holding down a heli are almost rusted shut !

I would have thought that Eithne would always carry some aviation fuel on board in case of emergencies/SAR way out to sea  - whether it would be to refuel an Irish, British or Canadian heli ?!
