SOUTH DUBLIN SKIES AND THE IRISH AIR CORPS SINCE 1922
Presented by SDCC Hertiage Officer and the Irish Air Corps

The Air Corps has operated from Casement Aerodrome, formerly known as Baldonnel, for nearly 90 years and has in that time been a constant presence in the skies over South County Dublin. In times of peace and war, fair weather and foul, day and night the air has hummed to the sound of beating propellers, clattering rotors or whining jets as Air Corps aircraft and their crews have passed overhead in the course of their duty.

Hidden from view and difficult to find in the green pastures to the west of Clondalkin the Air Corps’ presence is muted and subdued, a black-and-white print in a colour album. Self-effacing and modest, few people would be able to tell you much about its equipment, roles, personnel or illustrious history of service to the State even though the vast majority of its personnel live amongst the populace of South County Dublin. Contact with its aircraft, especially its training fleet, is an even rarer event.

The Air Corps, at RUA RED, now offers an opportunity to fill in some detail concerning your Air Corps and its association with South County Dublin. This is a ‘first contact’ exhibition aimed at informing, yet also challenging you to ask questions of yourself and not to settle for a short visit to a fleeting glimpse at the Air Corps’ background. but also to talk to some of our personnel and research the subject.

Perparations are well in hand with the exhibits, Micheal and his team are working hard to make it a success.
Display include artifacts, equipment, engines, a photgraphci display of aircraft used through the years and the centrepiece Marchetti SF260WE Warrior no 231 all from the museum.
Pic of 231 packed and ready to go over to Tallaght, it will be well worth a visit.

Thanks for the update & pictures Tony, unfortunately I won't be able to make it to the launch.

They're using one of my pictures on the promo material and I've been promised an invite in return, if the launch is at 5.30pm I'll never make it to Tallaght from Galway. (running short on holiday leave)

I'll definitely go up on one of the Saturday's that the exhibition is being held on though.

Sorry if this is a bit of a stupid question but do yeh need tickets for this exhibition? It says 'Book Now' on the website, but then it asks yeh to pay for tickets even though its free? Just a bit confusin...

The exhibition is FREE see Frank's initial posting, the official launch is the 5th and by invitation only, so from the 6th on, from 10am to 6pm except Sunday. Be there, everyones goin

Hi Frank,

I am sorry I did not bring my camera ( deffo a mortler for that) . The exhibition is extremely well laid out with the Marchetti 231 in the centre of the floor. The photograhic display is mounted on all four walls and is a credit to the photo section lads for the quality of the reproductions. There are engines... Goblin, Rolls Royce Merlin,  Dagger, Gipsy 111, Gipsy Major, model aircaft and memorabelia. Its a well done for Michael Whelan and the volunteers from O.N.E. Air Corps Branch . Incidentally the limited entry space to get the Marchetti in to the exhibition area was so critical it had to be "poured in" and not a scratch
Well worth a visit.
