Parents of Cadet Jevens attend commissioning
Thursday, 17 December 2009

The parents of Cadet David Jevens, who died in the Galway Air Corps crash two months ago, attended the commissioning of six of his classmates at Baldonnel outside Dublin this afternoon.

Cadet Jevens was to have been commissioned today.

The Cadets received their Military Pilot Wings from the GOC of the Air Corps, Brig Gen Ralph James just before lunch.

Donal and Liz Jevens accepted Wings on behalf of their son David, who was killed, along with Captain Derek Furniss.

The six cadets later received their Commissions as Officers from the Minister for Defence Willie O'Dea.

The Deputy Chief of Staff, Major General Dave Ashe, attended.

Mr O'Dea said the tragic events of 12 October not only took these two fine men from those they loved, it also deprived the Defence Forces and the State of their potential contribution and achievements.

For this to happen while Derek and David were in the service of their country, he said, is a cause of deep regret and sadness to everyone.

He welcomed the parents and family of Cadet Jevens to what he said must be an extremely sad and difficult occasion for them.

He hoped that the award of his Wings will, in some small way, assist them in coping with their great loss.
