You're showing your age now too, don't have the BAP any more, we've upgraded to the H&K USP

Thanks for that Frank!!! :tounge:
We even replaced the BAP long before that!!!
It was too big to carry in our flying suit pockets...so they gave us the  7.65 mm Walther PPK!!
I loved shooting that pistol! but liked the old Bap as well!!

I'll tell you what I liked, and miss... the Gustaf. I never got a "last shot" with that gun, it was replaced during the foot & mouth "emergency" and all range practise was banned for the duration.  :airforce_sad:

Ah the armed Reims - brings back great memories when the Northern Troubles were in full flight.  Many a time during that period I saw armed 172's flying in and out of Finer Camp!

Did'nt they nearly stall when you fired a rocket from the cessna?

No, rockets are recoil-less so as a result an Aircraft would not stall.

The rockets, allegedly, had some affect on the aircraft, dunno about causing it to nearly stall though. Maybe some of the older members can help out with this story?

Youd sorta think that the AC would hardly have armed them with rockets if there was a danger of stalling... :airforce_wink:

Right,

Just to clear up a few things, I've had a few clarifications from a very good source...

Rocket armed Cessna's, more than likely, never flew into Finner Camp, and if they had done it would have been a big deal.

Fouga is right, the rockets never had an effect on the Cessna's when fired as they were recoilless although I have to say, in my defence, that I'm sure I read somewhere that they did have some effect, looks like CK may have read the same piece.

There is a story that on one occasion the entire salvo fired at the same time which resulted in a severe drop in airspeed, not quite a stall though. again not sure how true it is but the story goes that arming the aircraft stopped after that.

I read somewhere that the drop in indicated airspeed when firing the rockets might have something to do with the exhaust gases from the rockets impinging on the aircraft static ports? If the pressure at the static port increases then the instruments will appear to indicate a drop in forward airspeed. Just from looking at the stencilling on the Cessna there are static ports part way back on the fuselage. Maybe this was the cause?

Joe
