From reading various postings on message boards & mailing lists a lot of us have been affected by the volcano in Iceland, I for one had to drive from Edinburgh to Holyhead to get out of the UK a few weeks back so this picture may be of interest to some of you.
Anyway, I spend the last 2 weeks or so in Florida on honeymoon (6 months delayed but still a honeymoon) and while returning home we flew past the Eyjafjoll volcano in Iceland. A mad scramble ensued and the camera was recovered from the overhead rack. The picture shows the volcano as seen from a US Airways Boeing 757 while flying from Philadelphia to Dublin on Sunday 9th May 2010.
The pilot said as we were leaving Philadelphia that we might see it en-route but he didn't actually call it over the intercom when we were passing it. We were on a red eye and it was about 7.30 in the morning so I guess he didn't want to wake up any passengers who were sleeping.
It was cool to see (but not so cool having to suffer it's consequences a few weeks back). The immediate area around the volcano was completely clouded over so all you could see from well over a hundred miles away was the plume of ash billowing up through the clouds.
The only pity of it all was the windows on the plane which didn't make for a sharp picture.
Oh, and in case you're wondering, even though I was on honeymoon I still managed to visit a few museums while in Florida as well as spending an hour & a half at Miami International. Lots of photographs were taken and I'll publish them in due course.
