Should Baldonnel be developed to become a semi-civilian airport - opened to commercial aircraft (e.g. a hub for biz jets) ?

im sure p doff that you only want access to the front of the dinning hall and not the kitchen.did you spend your time in those sinks in your day.
there has been talk off turning ball into a half civie airport since the late 80s but like a lot of things its only talk.

Of course it should, it would develop alot of Money and that green could be put back into the AC!

Also BAL would become a very very state of the art base, sure in the US dont some Wings operate out of half civvy half Military airports?

Jeez! Are they restricting you to zones now? Just as well they didn't do that in my day, I' never be able to nip down for a shit talk in BFTS with my old townies! And it might bring in some cash if the military opened the 'Don up to civvie stuff, it works pretty well at Aldergrove!

Only ANG units AFAIK, the loss of Baldonnel might be the final wstraw with regards to a unified independent IAC.
It'd be all too easy to promise the AC new facilities on or off of casement and then let ehm hang  issue new equipment piecemeal to scattershot units and hey presto a year later you have a Coastguard and maybe an army aviation platoon, if there's still an army.

Hey Silver congrats again... years ago when the PDs raised this issue I was very much against....now  I would think it would be a good idea as long as IAC continued to own and take priority like ...Rome Campino, Naples and Aldergrove Belfast.  Also all landing fees would have to go to the IAC!!!!

The yarn I heard is; o leary approched the DoD several years ago, with the suggestion that they turn Bal' over to him to be his airport, and out of the kindness of his wallet, he would allow the IAC to remain there, for the present.
Apparently the DoD people were not too taken with his approch and declined to accept his kind offer.
However, I also heard that land was bought, in order to extend the runways to facilitate the conversion to a civ' airport, that land was supposedly, subsequently, sold when plans fell thru'.
But, is it a good idea, mayby, if certain conditions were imposed on civ' operators, concerning priorities and so forth.
But, Bal' is also a training base, not many of the joint civ'/mil bases are training bases, they are, to the main;operating centres.
Ireland, no jets, no future!

It has the potential to generate some extra revenue of the AC. However, the cynic in me suspects that the AC would see little of the cash & would eventually get moved out to make space for Ryanair/ Michael O'Leary's ego.  '<img'>

Good point about Bal being a training base, Turkey.
Perhaps that is the main reason against opening up Casement.

except baldonnel ,the IAC has no main air base ,if it is open to civilian trafic ,the iac lost his independance for air operation and for the security of the base , it is not the good way.

Talking about training bases lads are any of you old enough to recall when Aer Lingus trainee pilots in the late 50's early 60's were given their Basic Flight Training by the Air Corps on the Chipmunks up in the Gorm? When was this stopped? I presume it came under the title of  "aid to  the civil power".  I am not sure if they then progressed to the Advanced Training on the Provosts but I think I recall that they were sent on for further training to the UK.
There is no mention of this in any written history of the Corps but I know for a fact it occured and in the past I would have met Aer Lingus pilots who were trained in this fashion.

hi everyone!, As always silver you have the most interesting ideas!, i think there are pro's and cons for this arguement, im all for the IAC improving the facillities, but not for Ryanair or others like them!, im not full of answers on this topic! the new id cards are being issued in the DON this week and once its fully active a person will only have access to the area they work at!..... straying from the point sorry!, anyhoo i think not!
