30,000 and climbing
« on: October 22, 2010, 06:56:50 pm »
Good evening all,

You may have noticed that the photo database now stands at 30,003 photo's. Can I just congratulate Frank and all fellow uploaders to the site. It's a great milestone and I for one enjoy checking the site for new photo's and of course to check my hit count. Let's hope for many thousands more of uploads for the future.

Just a thought!

Regards,

Paul

Wow ! Didnt notice the database roll over the 30,000 mark. It seems only a short time since it broke the 20,000 mark.   :applause:

Frank, how many photographers are on the site now ?

Thanks Lads!

Here are some stats:

As of 7pm (GMT) on 22nd October 2010:

- There are 30,003 unique pictures in the database with a combined total of 7,636,396 hits
- Frank Grealish has the most pictures in the database with a total photo count of 2695.
- Michael Kelly has the most popular picture with 7434 hits.
- The Airbus A320-214 is the most photographed aircraft type with 682 pictures.
- The Aerospatiale SA316B Alouette III is the most popular aircraft type with a total of 180,455 hits.

The above stats can be found here: http://www.irishairpics.com/database/stats.php (ignore the average hits data, the formula I used is a bit messed up)

Other stats that are not on the above page:

Total number of photographers: around about 340

Picture 20,000 added on 23rd November 2007
Picture 30,000 added on 22nd October 2010

It took almost 3 years (1,065 days) to add 10,000 pictures, which means I accepted, on average, 9.38 pictures every day for the last 3(ish) years.

Hopefully we can crack the next 10,000 pictures in less than 3 years.

Thanks to everyone for supporting the site.

Looks like the race for 30,000 is on again lads, I was asked to remove 562 images today so we're back below the 30,000 mark.

I plan to have the new screeners online this week sometime so hopefully we'll be able to get the upload queue moving along that bit quicker.

Regards,

Frank.

"I dont belive it" as Victor Meldrew would say ! Who is being such a girl ? If they submit them to you & you accept do you have to take such an instruction.

If I agree for a photo to be included in a book or magazine I cant go back after it is used & instruct that it be removed because I am no longer happy with the screening that I agreed to at an earlier point.  If nothing else Frank you should put the name up on the forum so the rest of us know who is wasting your time. 500+ photos = many hours screening  :banghead:

Joe

You should be able to put two and two together!

Ultimately the copyright rests with the photographer and there always has to be an option to have photos removed from the site.  All the major sites that I am aware of have had sigificant contributors cease uploading and/or request that have their photos be taken down from the site, for one reason or another.  A book or magazine is different as that is a once-off use, in effect, whereas the live nature of the internet does make deletion possible.  As you say, it is an inconvenience for the site but as they don't get to "own" photographers' contribution, only to host them, they have to make provision for removal at a photographer's request.

I actually agree S F, but after all the effort Frank has gone to to explain how his site's screening system works & after the guy uploaded 500+ photos he now decides he wants them taken down, in IMHO it smacks of baby throwing the rattle out of the pram. But I do agree with you fully on the "ownership" points, was just shooting from the hip with the first post.

All I can say is unbelievable! but as Short Final's says, the decision lies with the photographer. What a waste of time and effort!!

On the other hand us regular photographers who can understand criticism and take the "no decision" without having a hissy fit and acting like a spoilt child will just have to soldier on an keep this website full of good quality photo's, and hopefully attracting more members at the same time. Bring on the 30,000 mark again and the next 10,000!!

Paul

Gees Frank,

Hope my suggestion re the Rating System didn't have anything to do with his decision!

Hi Chris,

No, nothing to do with you, just me and my inconsistent screening!
